San Sebastian

@FatCat ive just had a look through the hotels pics, some very impressive views. How long is the walk from the hotel to the town would you say?
It’s about 15 minutes from memory - it’s really nice as you walk along the beach.
Does it not say on the website how long it is?

Often fancied San Sebastien, wasn't the food one of the main reasons Moyes took the Sociedad job? :ROFLMAO:
I wouldn't be surprised. This may have changed but 3 years back it was second in the list of cities for the amount of Michelin stars per head of population (behind Kyoto).

The food, not just the Pintxos, is something else. Add to that the most gorgeous horseshoe shaped bay and warm (for the North coast) weather. Shame its just such a pig to get to.

Well based on comments this weekend about international travel I don't think this will be happening. I think the best I might get is doing my own selection of Pintxos and serving them in various locations round the house and garden with a different glass of vino in each!

Been on my list of places I'd like to visit for a while but every time I start looking to book a mini break somewhere and consider it, the multi flight travelling puts me off. Is fly/drive the answer?

Never mind maybe next year - you will enjoy it more when everything opens up and travel is allowed!

The local white wine is Txakoli ( pronounced Chacoli), it is the drink to have in San Sebastian with pintxos, the best one comes from the Getaria area just down the coast, it is usually served cold and/or in a icebucket, it is ever so slightly sparkling and dry it will make the tapas go down faster. If it's possible have a trip out to a winery and have a meal and drink at one one of them, they can be top class meals with a superb wine.

Yeah, flying to either Bilbao or biarritz and you can drive there. I took the bus from Bilbao though and it was really good. Ran by the British too. National express own the bus company

May I intrude on this thread on Foodie weekends in Spain & ask if anyone has been to Cadiz. The Rick Stein series of weekends away had this on a couple of years ago & it’s been at the back of my mind since.
getting there when I had a look into it seemed a bit of a hike, but if anyone knows different please tell.
Otherwise San Sebastián looks like it may get busy later this year .

Never been but its known as a classy resort with the Spanish. The climate is cooler in the Summer than the Meditterrean coast and cool is preferable in July/August in Spain.

The scenes in the Battle of Britain film (1969) where the Germans are eating in white jackets and then viewing their invasion boats was filmed in San Sebastian (supposed to be Calais area in the film). Quite a bit of the film was made in Spain because of the better weather, Franco subsidies, and the fact that some of German WW2 planes in the film were still in the Spanish Air force and flown by Spanish Civil War trained (Franco) pilots.

Speaking of German WWII planes. if you're in the Area go to Guernica. It's the ancient Basque capital and a gorgeous little town with an important tree (long story)
However there is a memorial there to the villagers who did when the Luftwaffe did their first ever bombing raid. They wanted to hone their skills and Franco suggested they try bombing Guernica at market time. The capital was giving the General a hard time with it's resistance. Very sad memorial

I was inter-railing many years ago and the line to Barcelona was blocked and we ended up in San Sebastian via Bordeaux purely by chance.

What a beautiful place it was, and the food we could afford was amazing (I was a student at the time). It had a great atmosphere around the place, really chilled out.

Always said I would go back with some extra spending money. We stayed in a pension in the town, the beach was a fair distance from the town if I remember.
