Sage adviser claims ministers trying to get as many as possible infected with Covid

That's the govt stated policy - to build herd immunity - don't know why he's claiming it as a revelation. They're gambling that most ppl will cope because they've been vaxed and won't be hospitalised, and the number of deaths will be 'acceptable'. They'll only backtrack and introduce lockdown measures if it looks like NHS is getting overwhelmed

Only issue with getting as many people as possible infected is it increases the chances of the virus mutating into a variant that is more transmissible and more lethal. The worst case scenario is that a new variant is resistant to current vaccines and we are back to square one.

The only issue?

Possibly, more likely new variants will be brought into UK because our border controls are so weak with limited checks there and limited checks on ppl isolating / quarantining

We are certainly more likely to create the variants in the current climate than import them.

In reality once cases are this high within the country there is little benefit to quaritntine/ isolation unless someone tests positive.

We are highly likely to import new variants. in fact I would go so far as say its a given. For example Indonesia remains on the amber list, always has done, whilst they have their own covid crisis.

The latest 'strong variant' or Variant of Interest seems to be Lambda (Peru) which is outgunning the Gamma (Brazilian) and fighting it out with Delta in the US / South America.

A very game of supremacy between the variants, one could only hope one of these variants becomes the kingpin and is relatively mild in its effect. Hope springs eternal.

In the UK its a high vax rates/low restrictions/higher death strategy - opposed to say Oz which is low vax/very tight borders/very low death strategy.

The Oz strategy is keeping more people alive, which is good, but they may have to face more problems down the line if they don't get vax rates up. I don't think the UK can isolate its self from the rest of the world as much as say Oz. Oz and NZ have made enemies by refusing to come to the RL World Cup. If they were 88% vaxed and 30% had had Covis like the UK they would probably have come.

There's nothing to worry about. We have world leading vaccination and test/trace in place. I'm looking forward to arriving home from Africa in a couple of weeks, as a seafarer I'm allowed back into the UK with no test or quarantine, it's all good, BloJo has it under control :cautious:

I mention in march last year about the real worry of long term impact of covid in the young and healthy.
Not " long covid" but likely lung damage emerging in mid or later life. A lot of Medics are concerned that the impact of " herd immunity" will be shown in 20 years time.

The reason might/probably be because people are trying to find out just what the government have and have ordered of each vaccin. Apparently they’ve now gone mysteriously quiet on figures of what vaccines they have leading people to surmise they haven’t got enough Pfizer-BioNtech for the youngsters. You can walk in and get a second jab of the P-B but anyone looking for a first jab is looking towards the end of September.

The red list countries are checked thoroughly on most part. It was a scene of carnage in Heathrow Terminal 4 a few weeks ago. Queues a mile long etc. Although I was granted exemption from hotel quarantine, I didn't receive any guidance on what I could and couldn't do. I played it sensible and only went to Tesco on day 7 during the late night quiet time to get supplies. All other times I was working in the house and garden.
There should be more detailed checks on amber list arrivals for sure. A phone call a day you could just ignore is a bit pointless.

I arrived from the US (amber) on Thursday and, so far, have had no checks that I'm actually isolating. Mind, everyone I know of who has been checked, it's only been a phone call.

Our approach to our borders and international travel has been pathetic from the very start.
Why can't we be leaders and have a High Vax, Strong border, Low deaths approach?

I am very keen to go back to Western Australia in January/Feb, but they won't be letting us in I'm sure.
I think they have it right, but need to get their own **** together re vaccine programme.

The day before we flew, the US government advised people not to travel to the UK as it is so unsafe - hardly surprising.

The 2 Australians I'm working with just now are having a lot of trouble arranging to get back into their own country at the moment. I'm not envisaging being able to make a visit myself for a good year at least.
