Ryan giles

He's probably the one player in the team that hasn't benefitted from the change of formation under Carrick.

Would be better as a wing back with a back 3 where he had slightly less defensive responsibility. Either way, he definitely starts. He just needs to be accomodated. When we are under pressure he needs support from the players around him.

Arguably our most dangerous weapon.

Chuba wouldn't have half of the goals he has if it wasn't for Giles.

Anyone suggesting Giles shouldn't be playing every single game for us, when he's available, should go take up another sport.

Hello mr patronising

From the poster who discredited carrick

Think there's just a little difference.

I was vocal about not wanting Carrick due to his inexperience at managerial level - and since I have praised him immensely and admitted so far I have got it wrong (gladly so too, and long may it continue).

You're saying Giles shouldn't play against the better teams in this league.

Farcical statement by yourself...and I'm not the only one to think it...as this car crash of a thread shows.

It’s a Boro forum, people should be allowed to debate and have different opinions.

Without doubt. Totally agree.

But come on. This isn't an opinion. This is baiting by the original poster.

What's next? We need to drop Chuba? Fry needs a rest?

There's opinions and debates, and then there's ridiculous statements.

I think he should play, as I have posted, but I don't think it was a ridiculous OP.
It prompted debate about a player we all value, but most acknowledge he has defensive weakness that is exposed by quality sides.
The debate looks at where he should play, how he can be supported and what he needs to improve.

But there is plenty of other people who think it’s a valid point and something that’s worth discussing

Isn’t the whole point of a message board, particularly about the boro about starting threads that get people discussing it

As pointed out to another poster I stated that I think giles should be starting. It’s clear though versus Burnley and Brighton that we are susceptible from crosses from giles side

Not a ridiculous argument at all. He barely gets up the pitch against top, top sides because they basically pen in him with their wingers and possesion of the ball. He has proved he isn't very good defensively as we have seen against burnley, brighton and other teams this season.

Its a valid point to maybe go with someone more solid or look at alternatives for certain games. If we can keep it tight maybe more useful coming on higher up the pitch as a sub. I dont think bola is the answer. Its just hightlights our lack of depth.

His defending can be seen to look suspect, but I firmly believe some of it stems from the tactics Carrick has us playing.

When we're in possession, Smith tucks in from the right and Giles ends up as a left winger/LWB, meaning there will always be space behind him because we end up with a back 3 at times.

The benefit of this far outweighs the cost as we have seen. His presence at the top end of the pitch with his delivery into Chuba has so far paid dividends.

Yes some of the top teams may exploit this, so we may need to look at it, but I personally wouldn't say it's all down to Giles and his 'lack of defending' - more so due to the tactics we currently play.

Over the last few years at Liverpool, they've had the same 'problem' with TAA. He's so good going forward, that Liverpool are often happy for him to risk leaving space at the back because his attacking threat is so good. So the reward most of the time outweighs the risk.

For the record, I'm not one minute comparing Giles to TAA btw.

The problem ISNT people getting in behind Giles when he is forward. It's when he is in the correct position, he doesn't get tight enough and lets people run by him too easily. This happens alot with people being allowed to run across the edge of the box and shoot. He is also slow to react and switches off. I don't think its down to tactics, it's down to the player.

It is difficult to drop such a creative player but if we want to be promoted these are the small things that need to be improved upon whether its giles himself or another player.

TAA is rarely in the right position to defend successfully.

Don't agree it's solely down to the player.

Yes his defending could be better. And he needs to improve that part of his game. And he is at fault at times.

With all that in mind, I would not even think about dropping him. Not for one second.

the goals we have conceded from his side have been crosses that have come from that side and giles is back in a defensive position at that time. That is we have retained our defensive shape. We’re not conceding from counter attacks with giles up the pitch

Nonesense to drop Giles, He is our biggest creative source.

However, the OP has a point in that although its our greatest attacking threat, it also our biggest defensive weakness.

McGree drifts inside, taking the wide midfielder or fullback with him and creates loads of space for Giles to drive into and attack the fullback one on one, and because his delivery is sooo good he doesn't really need to bet a man to whip it over.

In the games when we are gonna be under the cosh, id drop McGree and play Bola just ahead of him to offer more protection or, ideally, bring in a centre mid that's left footed that can shuffle over and double up on those attacking threats.
