Rotherham eyeing transfer agreement for rarely seen Middlesbrough player

Rotherham United are keen to sign centre back Grant Hall from Middlesbrough, journalist Alan Nixon has reported via Patreon.

Hall joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer back in the summer of 2020, following his departure from another Championship side, QPR.
However, the defender has since struggled for opportunities at The Riverside Stadium, making just 28 appearances across his two seasons with ‘Boro, only eight of which came during the most recent campaign. Now it seems as though the 30-year-old could again be on the move this summer, with newly promoted Championship Rotherham a potential destination.
According to this latest update, the Millers are keen to sign Hall on loan for next season, and are hoping to raise funds to make a deal happen, with the centre back reportedly available.
As things stand, there is just a year remaining on Hall’s contract with Middlesbrough, and it has therefore been suggested that the centre back will want a permanent move when any temporary deal comes to an end.

I find the Grant Hall situation a strange one. He's a player who has had a lot of games at this level for QPR and came with a reputation of having a good attitude, yet it hasn't ever happened for him here and I wonder why? He wouldn't have featured as often (and been as highly regarded) at QPR if he wasn't once decent surely?

This is all just my opinion, but I don't think he fits into the 3 at the back system that both Warnock and Wilder have used. He's an old fashioned 4-4-2 centre back, same as Aden Flint was.

If you play with 2 CBs, it gives one of the CBs more freedom to roam, go closer to the half way line to try and ping balls out wide, stay up after the corner is taken for rebounds/second crosses (don't have to rush back), etc... and he's always covered by his partnering CB. We don't play like that, but these are all the qualities in Hall's game.

If you play with 3 CBs like we do, the LCB and RCB have the overlapping, but they overlap with less freedom, and more organisation, which requires a quicker player like McNair or Dijksteel.
The CCB has to cover for the overlapping CBs, which in our system is where Hall would need to play - However, in the CCB role in a back 3, he can't use the qualities he has.
The CB role is also currently occupied by Fry and Lenihan, who are both better CBs.

When he had a run of games at the end of last season (edit: last last season), he had the worst tackles per game ratio in the team, and one of the highest shots per game ratios... which isn't what Wilder wants from defenders.

It's been the wrong move for him but as alluded to by the previous couple of posters he's more suited to a 2 centre back system.

I don't think there are any issues behind the scene and from what I can see he has been professional despite the lack of time on the pitch. At 30 he's probably in around his prime as a CB so if he moves on I'll wish him the best of luck in the rest of his career and hope it's a success wherever he goes. Apart from if he signs for the Mackems of course.

Seems an honest sort of bloke - Rotherham will benefit from his experience if he signs for them.
Plus, its another one off our wage bill.

Hopefully a double signing including Uche, as they were linked with him a couple of weeks ago.

When Hall arrived, I was hoping he’d be scoring Ayala-like from some of our corner opportunities, as opposed to the dismal level of production provided by his predecessor Flint

I think it probably shows how much we pay the likes of Payero / Akpom and Hall etc.

We can only get shot on loan. Nobody can match the wages we pay them.

It will be like Lumley. A one year loan then his contracts up. Another amazing signing.
