Rome or Paris?

Looking to book a 4 day trip to either Rome or Paris to celebrate the wifes 60th in May. Last time we were in Paris was 30 years ago and enjoyed it, but reading recent reports, the city of culture of culture seems to have become a bit "trashy". I am thinking Rome would be the better option. The last time I went was as a 15 year old in 1978 on a church pilgrimage to see the Pope get elected!!. Any thoughts / recommendations?

Paris was not trashy when I went in October. All cities have their bad parts. Both equally great weekend break cities But if you have already been to both why not somewhere like Venice or Vienna.

I loved Rome when I was there and have never been to Paris

Can I recommend Malta

Small enough and easy enough to get around for 4 days with the public transport passes they have available
History everywhere you turn
Beautiful weather
Beautiful food
Cheap enough even in touristy hotspots

If your splashing out on either Rome or Paris and you decide on Malta then stay here - https://www.phoeniciamalta.com/

Absolutely phenominal and a perfect point to start and end your day......in my opinion of course

I'm biased to Rome as I stayed there for 4 months in summer '92 doing a student job. If you compare Paris and Rome temps and rain in that month , much more likelihood of having nicer and warmer weather in Rome too

Having visited both cities in the last 5 years it would be Rome for me. So much to see and do. Good transport network also. Obviously you need to take personal care in and around the main tourist areas but that's the same in most major cities👍

Love Malta

Paris is nice, but it's overrated. There are any number of interesting places, like Rome, Berlin, Madrid, Milan, Vienna, Lisbon, Munich, or Edinburgh to go in May, when the weather is nice.

I've always fancied Malta and this may be the year.
I opened your recommendation with a bit of excitement. Had you found a hidden gem?
Luckily there are loads of nice hotels for less than £500 per night.

I think you’d be more wary of your safety in Paris…

But like has been said any major city has its issues, I enjoyed Rome more but depends what you’re looking for..

Ancient history or the more modern sights of Paris..

Oh indeed this was aimed at the OP and it being a special occasion

Going via Tui isn`t bad tbh, we stayed at the dB Seabank up at Mellieha Bay but wouldn`t recommend as needs some tlc (rooms need updating as showing age), if your not bothered about that though then certainly ok but I`d be more inclined to be around Valetta or Sliema

The other dB hotels on the island have undergone renovations so may be better off in them

You wouldn't be disappointed with either, but Rome has so much to see, so much history and culture, it's a clear winner for me.

Paris a little more relaxed and if you like your art it probably has the edge on that score.
