Roland Rat

We have a rat in the garden. There are a couple of ponds in houses around us, and we have quite a bit of decked platform and two sheds that attracts rats to the immediate area sometimes.

Well they’re back.

I hate the idea of poisoning them, and definitely don’t want to risk harming all the squirrels we have in the garden. So it looks like a live trap is the only option.

Anyone have experience or suggestions before I head to Screwfix and commit?

TIA.

I thought he’d died there for a minute.

Cat. Or you can get sonic devices that can be set to rodent frequency but don’t know if that would affect squirrels. Mind same could be said for a cat I guess.

Sorry, I’ve not really helped have I?

They don't like lavender.

Edit: Lavender is a fragrant herb famous for its soothing and relaxing properties. It's also a great rat repellent, as it has a strong and pleasant scent that rats dislike. Lavender contains essential oils that act as natural repellents for rats and other pests, such as mosquitoes, flies, and moths.

Poison and a bait station. If you trap it what's your next move? You have to kill it humanely because releasing it 'elsewhere' is potentially against the law or simply passing on the problem to someone else dependent on species.

We've got one. Pest control feela said they are solitary this time of year, we are just unlucky as there is no food source so chances are he's found somewhere safe.

Poison down, hopefully that will sort it.

It’s nature so just leave it. We have them in our garden and they cause no harm.

Other than Weils disease of course.

And on the opposite side of the coin, bees love lavender so that is a bonus. Bees are good (as I believe The Shamen once sang)

You replied as I was editing my answer for a bit more context of my thought process. I don’t think very often so I wanted to explain.
Sorry, I did. You’re right Alex. I’ve re read it since. And not really helped but I appreciate the endeavor *laughing emoji*

I was going to release it at the lake nearby.

I love this forum for turning up things like this. Have spent the last 10 minutes spraying lavender oil into the unexposed faces of fence and decking beams above its entry points.

Mrs Hap has been tasked buying plants while we’re out today.

Thanks chap.

Someone mentioned earlier the sonic devices. We had a rodent problem in our loft for a while and we installed a couple of these and it solved the problem almost immediately.

I don’t know if it was mice or rats though as I was too scared to go up and check.
It may have been a small man with dainty footsteps for all I know.
But anyway the sonic devices worked very well.

Let us know if works. I love lavender and will be getting some in the garden at new house and I’d like to give any rats there fair warning before I plant.
