RIP Mike Yarwood

On the plus side, he took 'impressions' to a new level, taking on the blandest politicians: Wilson, Callaghan, Major.

Minus: doing comedy actors 'in character' like Frank Spencer, is not so clever, though I suppose that was what the public wanted.

I was just chatting to Mrs Steer about the latter point. I think that many others after Mike Yarwood did impressions of the typical subjects Frank Spencer and Jimmy Saville and Michael Caine etc. So what Yarwood might have done initially may be been slightly fresher at the time.

My vague recollections of the late 70s and early 80s were that Yarwood was funny and a very good impressionist, but that he started to go downhill in the mid 80s.

Certainly in his heyday he was a massive name and at the time a fairly unique talent that pathed the way for many other really good impressionists that followed on. He left his mark in this world.

RIP

Such a clever but troubled man. One of my childhood delights watching the Mike Yarwood Show. Saw him on stage at The Futurist, he was so good live, despite his confidence issues and self doubts.

R.I.P. Mike, thanks for the memories, gone but never forgotten.

My favourite entertainer growing up. Definitely of his time, generally pretty kind to his subjects. Spitting Image and alternative comedy of the 80s surpassed his more gentle style.
