RIP John Pilger

Oh, no :(

I liked Pilger and this is truly sad news. I know he wasn't everyone's cup of tea, to put it mildly, but I think he made some great docs that hit home, and thought his style was very captivating. I always kept an eye out for his work though I was a latecomer..

RIP John Pilger

His early investigative journalism was brilliant but he let himself down with his fawning over Putin and Russia.
He didn’t fawn over Putin. He just didn’t react to a war between two countries that consistently ranked in the bottom six on both of Europe’s democracy and corruption indices by automatically parroting the line it was a simple battle between absolute good and absolute evil. In that, he merely remained a good journalist and a good historian. Nuance Is something most journalists, and most political arguments, have lost. He retained it.

Well I would disagree. It's a hell of a long time since John Pilger was relevant in journalistic terms. He consistently pronounced that Russia would never invade Ukraine and when they did he blamed it squarely on the West.

He described the poisoning of Skipral and his daughter as a “carefully constructed drama” and that the events were part of a “propaganda campaign”. He also hinted at the possibility of British involvement in the attempted murder of the pair simply due to Porton Down being a few miles down the road.

Then there is his defence of Assad and Milosevich which is too disgusting to go into.

Of course he had his supporters on the far left but I won't expand on that tonight.
