RIP Dickie Rooks

136 games for the Boro. Well before my time but remember my grandad saying he was a very good player. Any memories of him?

Awww one of my first Boro hero's.
I've told this before but somewhere in my house is an autograph book with one Jimmy Clitheroe signature and one Donald Peers signature in it on the front page.
The next 60 + pages were the signature of Dickie Rooks. I was about 9 yrs old and found out he lived near me. I used to go to his house all the time and ask for his autograph. He used to sign, ruffle my hair and say see you next week son.
He must have thought I was a right pain but never let on.
RIP Dickie x
I think there's something in my eye 😪

Very sad. One of the first players I saw playing when I started going to games in 1965 and, of course, he played in THE Oxford game in 1967. In my mind I always picture him in the kit with the white shoulders.

When Rooks retired from football he became a self-employed builder in his home town Sunderland.

...... different times etc ....

I don't want to derail the thread but were you at Great Yarmouth in about 1967-ish?

I remember seeing Dickie Rooks when he played at Ayresome Park for Boro . A big blonde centre half, he always gave his all for Boro.
That game at Cardiff where we lost and were relegated. Dickie played up front ,scored a hat trick , but he wasn’t at centre half , so Boro lost 3-5.
RIP Dickie.

My dad took me to a game, I think against orient, we sat in the east end. My dad predicted he would cost us a goal, and so it came to pass……

I'll derail it slightly for you Capy. Nothing to do with Boro, but I worked in a seafront restaurant in Gt. Yarmouth during the summer holidays in 1967. I hope you were fortunate enough not to eat there.

I probably saw most of Dickie's games at Ayresome. He was a good old-fashioned no-nonsense centre half, and I suppose the nearest we've had in recent years would be Matt Clarke with hair.

A regular member of the promotion team of 66/67, my first season as a fan . RIP Dickie.

My memory of Dickie was in the opposition box, I think he was slightly more dangerous there than in our own. Gordon Jones picking him out from free kicks etc. I remember a beauty against Bristol City for a 1-0 win with a late goal. That's maybe what tempted them to sign him.
