Rio Ferdinand Racially Abused

“No, nothing was ever said. They probably didn’t feel comfortable asking me how I felt.” From boos and monkey chants on the pitch to silence in the changing room, former England striker Emile Heskey looks back on the night in 2002, as Slovakia played England in a Euro 2004 qualifier, when he was the victim of racial abuse. His message today, as Black Lives Matter protests continue across the world, is players need to stand with their Black teammates.

RACISM IS NOT AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE

or a source of fun.

RACISM IS VIOLENCE

and needs to be confronted - no matter how uncomfortable it feels!

Bolasie, 31, shared a screenshot of the vile message on his Twitter page, branding Thompson a "keyboard warrior" and adding a rat emoji.

The DR Congo star added: "Something seriously wrong with people.

"Still yet to meet a person who had this energy when they saw me."

Bolasie's post has been liked more than 33,000 times - and retweeted over 2,500 times.

His tweet was also flooded with supportive comments from footie fans and Twitter users.

Police Scotland and Cleveland Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.

And Instagram confirmed they have limited Thompson's account, and threatened to remove it if he further violates the picture app's policies.
Middlesbrough, who loaned Bolasie from Everton in January, released a statement condemning the abuse and highlighting their "zero-tolerance attitude to discrimination".

It read: "The racial abuse directed to Yannick Bolasie on social media yesterday is vile and unacceptable, and demonstrates exactly why more has to be done to identify the perpetrators of such comments and to bring them to justice.

"The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities by both Yannick and ourselves and he has our full support.

"It is of great concern to the club that we are witnessing behaviour of this type and it cannot be allowed to continue.

"As our players said when responding to the debate on taking the knee we now need to see demonstrable actions from those who have the power to implement them rather than further gestures. Actions must speak louder than words.

Something seriously wrong with people. Keyboard warrior
Yannick Bolasie

"We repeat that we will not tolerate abuse of any form and any individuals who are identified to us will not only face the prospect of criminal charges but will also be banned from the Riverside Stadium.

"The MFC family stands together as one to unite against all forms of discrimination."

Jonny - I don't get this - how could making a monkey gesture be construed as anything other than racism. And why would there be any other agenda than to find the culprit, then charge him and to also underline how this is a despicable action and something that no one at all should have to be the victim of.
Is this perhaps a case where we need educating in exactly what the actions mean and also exactly how the victim is made to feel by this? Just how traumatic it can be. Are we too sheltered in a white world to understand how one simple gesture can insult, undermine and alienate its intended victim. Do we need to pause in our busy schedules and think about this. Perhaps we all owe it to the victims of racism to learn about how these actions/words/attacks hurt and traumatise.

I agree with you completely Rob but now I really want to hear more about your 'bust schedule'.

Very organized to have a schedule for it, I have more of an opportunistic approach.
I'm guessing that Rob being the good bloke that he is and being all about equality just wants to make sure that he doesn't give the right one more attention than the left one or vice versa. You have to admire him for being that organised.

Rob, he's been given the opportunity to explain another situation where making a monkey gesture at a black ex-footballer isn't racist and he has declined to answer, instead going down the obfuscation route. That tells you everything.

But you have to allow for all possible scenarios BoroMart. What if there actually was a rogue gorilla on the loose and it was creeping up behind Rio and the bloke was just trying to warn him that he could be in danger? That does seem pretty unlikely, admittedly but it could happen. That seems to be Jonny's really well thought out argument here.

Thats the thing with this one, when you try and play devil’s advocate and look for an alternative to racism, every scenario is utterly bonkers, which suggests that the simplest answer (racist doing monkey actions to RF) is the truth.

Of course there are times when there’s an alternative explanation and we have to be careful when accusing someone of something serious like racism, but this seems a pretty straightforward case of ignorant idiot.
