Riley McGree Socceroos Q&A

Another complaint about the coffee of Teesside, De Roon wasn't alone in that.

I do like a coffee, but I'm not a connoisseur. I don't really understand how places can supposedly differ so much. The machines are pretty much the same right? And you can order the same beans they use in Melbourne or Milan or wherever.

So are they saying the baristas are crap (but again, really, how hard can it be?) Or what?

Genuinely don't get it, but happy to be enlightened!

Costa and Nero are like the McDonalds of Coffee tho aren’t they?

Most chain coffee shops are rubbish, as they're about speed and uniformity more than anything. Couple with their barristas who are just employees who've just attended a quick training upon joining, and you lose any element of skill and craft when it comes to making coffee.

Interview is strange. Can't decide if the 2 don't like each other, if McGree is a d*ck, or he just can't be arsed.
Some gentle joshing regarding Adelaide vs Melbourne (where that guy was from) the interviewer tried a bit of bants.. but it just didn’t work. He stuck with it tho!

Some can make a decent cup, but they are self taught mostly and rarely get any training.

The best coffee locally is The Mockingbird in Yarm I think, unless anyone else can recommend anywhere?

Its always bemused me how us Brits are unable to produce decent coffee. After spending a few years in France and Spain where grabbing a decent coffee is as easy as crossing the road, since returning to the UK I never cease to be amazed at how we are unable to do the same. Plus the rubbish we do serve is also twice the price!

Spanish coffee ?? Wouldn't be on my list of great coffee countries.

You can get crap coffee in France, Spain and Portugal but it's more likely that they have had years more experience in most cafes, bars etc of using those machines and getting blends that their customers like and just getting the little things right which lead to a perfect cup of coffee, I think mostly in the UK and probably the USA style wins out of over content, it's almost if you have a stylish looking coffee place then that merits £3 + for a cup of junk.

USA is a strange one, you have two leagues of coffee.

You have the volume, black sludge purveyors like Dunkin Donuts and even Starbucks, especially outside the big cities. However in SF, LA, NY, Chicago and Austin you get some great places, some of which are localised and others which have spread across the country for example Blue Bottle.

The family crest tattooed on his arm looks a hell of a lot like the Middlesbrough coat of arms, the one with the Southern Cross to represent Captain Cook instead of the middle ship.

I reckon he should get himself down Dinky's or Sinbad's and get Erimus written under it

Is that through experience or a holiday in mostly non Spanish tourist places, because when you get to have coffee that the Spanish drink you're realise how much better it is than over here.

A mixture of holidays, and some working visits over there. Not to say I've not have some good drinks over there, it's just I've never been impressed with the standard across the board, as opposed to somewhere like Italy where you have to look hard to find a bad coffee.
