Riley McGree in the Australia World Cup squad

Looking at the Australia squad, they're nowhere near the team they had in 2006.

packed with PL players then, now it's SPL, Championship and Danish league players.

I have to think a world cup in that part of the world would have had a major impact on the games development there.

I think he was always in the reckoning, he was only left out of the last squad due to injury
He was at one point reckoned to be 4th choice after the lad from Luton and as that article states he has since got back into favour so his place was not always guaranteed. It looks like it is now.

Here’s the key bits from Cardiff’s link

GOALKEEPERS (3)

  • Sean Johnson (NYCFC)
  • Zack Steffen (Middlesbrough)
  • Matt Turner (Arsenal)
The only question here is who the third goalkeeper will be.
I’m going with Sean Johnson. In the last two years, he’s been playing lights out for NYCFC. He's a good pro and a leader with a great attitude who will push to compete with the other two keepers every day.
I still don’t know who will be the No. 1 starting goalkeeper when we play against Wales. Steffen has put his name back in the hat after a few clean sheets for Middlesbrough, but new Arsenal man, Matt Turner, has also played well in the Europa League and made some big saves when needed in the last two friendly matches with the USMNT. Turner seems back from a groin injury, too.
MISSED THE CUT
  • Ethan Horvath (Luton Town)
Historically, we’ve been blessed with top goalkeepers and this cycle is no different. I had a couple of USMNT camps with Ethan before I retired. He is the ultimate teammate – a great goalkeeper with a good head on his shoulders.

FULL ROSTER

My 2022 USMNT World Cup squad.
  • Strikers (3): Ferreira, Pepi, Sargent
  • Wingers (5): Aaronson, Arriola, Pulisic, Reyna, Weah
  • Midfielders (7): Acosta, Adams, de la Torre, Musah, McKennie, Sands, Tillman
  • Defenders (8): Cannon, Carter-Vickers, Dest, Palmer-Brown, Ream, Robinson, Yedlin, Zimmerman
  • Goalkeepers (3): Johnson, Steffen, Turner
No place for Hoppe? o_O

Steffen made his debut in 2018, there have been 67 USA matches since then, Steffen has started 28 of them.

He's missed 9 matches this year through injury or family reasons.

He got injuries and Covid last year in the autumn/winter fixtures, then there were quarantine rules in place so the USA didn't call up England based players.

He was injured whilst starting in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League last year and missed the Gold Cup because of that.

Most of the games he's not played in since his debut have been because of injuries, illness or Covid rules.

Shows what I know if that's true.

Most of the people in the comment seem very shocked too.
