Retraining

Hi all, I’m currently looking at retraining in a new discipline as I feel like I need a change of career. The hardest part is trying to work out what I want to do. I’m currently lucky enough to have the time and money to make a change, so I want to make the right choice before I rush into anything.

One of the ideas I have is retraining as an electrician. Does anyone have any experience of working in the trade? Has anyone retrained to become an electrician? How did they go about this? What qualifications are needed? Are there any employers in the area who take on retrained people etc?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My mate retrained as an electrician after working in London as an estate agent for about 15 years. He got sick of it, was completely burnt out and they moved up to Grantham. One of the things he found difficult was getting work as most sparkies would take on the young lads. 3 years on he’s now teaching the course he started at his local college.

Friend of mine took a different route after 20 years - plumber.
He took the route of getting himself on courses before finding someone to take him on as an apprentice.

He also got lots of practice and experience from friends - getting reliable tradesmen is a nightmare.
He is loving it

One of the things that stands out (as someone useless with this kind of stuff) is those tradesmen who do a good job and…… are reliable enough to get back to you quickly and honestly with timescales.

Good luck

What sort of electrician? I'm not sure about the domestic side, but I'd say there's definitely a shortage on the industrial side. More interesting too, as one lighting circuits pretty much like the next.

Thanks for all of your advice, very helpful.

I was thinking of the domestic side but I’ll have a look into the industrial side. Thanks for the advice.

Career changed twice in my life.

Electrician does seem to be listed on UK shortage list.
Company I work for always seem to be advertising for domestic sparks, I know you’ll need level 3 nvq because my pal didn’t have this, and I’d recommend doing some research into requirements of 18th edition.
