Reading an article of the admiral england kit of 1982 it mentioned that it was the first replica shirts mass produced in adult sizes. Nowadays it common for everyone of all ages to wear replica shirts to go to the match. Growing up in the 70s/80s no one except maybe very young children wore replica shirts. Adults started to wear them maybe very late 80s early 90s but don't think it became common place until mid 90s. I have never worn a replica shirt to the match but why do you think adults wear them now and didn't back then.

Maybe because their was a big football hooligan scene in the late 80's early 90's
Hooligans do not wear colours and going to the match wearing casual clothing was a thing.

All seater stadiums changed how football was supported, and football was not really a family game until mid 90's onwards.
When more family's started going to the match then i think being uncool and wearing a replica shirt was acceptable.

Adults probably wear them now because we've grown up with them..... i was a little kid in the mid-90s - so wearing a shirt has always been "normal"
