Relegation play-offs and an AllStar game

How do 4 teams play off for a relegation spot? Presumably the losing semi-finalists progress to a final rather than the winners. My head hurts just thinking about that as a concept!
If you lose the relegation semi final then you're relegated, if you lose the relegation final then you're relegated.

Last one standing is the winner and stays up.

not really, 8pts separated 17th-13th, that would have been 5 teams try to evade the 4th play off spot which would have gone dwon to the 2nd last weekend for them all and the last for some.

With a dozen games left last season, 14th place was only 3 points off relegation.

There was plenty to play for.

Instead why not stay with the three worst team over the season getting relegated rather than rewarding a team for merely playing two cup games well to survive.

This how American sports fans think.

I was talking about the premier league in the us a few years ago with American friends who watch the prem a lot.

And my friends brother turns and say to me why isn’t there a play off competition at the end of the season.

I thought he was confused so I said we do have one to decide the last promotion spot and he stops me and says no.

I mean a play to decide the overall champion of the prem I said but it’s a league the winner is the one that wins the most games in a league.

But he says yes but imagine how great an 8 team play off would be after the league to decide the overall winner…,

He was really keen as were the other Americans in the bar.

I was completely lost as to why you’d need this but that’s how American sports fans think.

They want that final day show down.
Quite like the idea for the Champions of England. Would open up the chance to smaller clubs to win the title.

Imagine the reaction of the European Super League clubs if their grip on the title was loosened with more clubs having an opportunity to win a play off competition.

Would be worth it just to see their incredulous outrage 🙂

Although the same teams would probably still win it 9 times out of 10.

We already have cup competitions. Winning a league is a far bigger achievement than winning a cup. The league table rarely lies. Teams end up where they deserve to after a full season. Don't think there are many years where you'd argue the best team didn't win the league whereas teams like Wigan and Portsmouth have won the FA Cup and Liverpool (05), Porto etc have won the Champions League.

If we have a play off system for promotion then why not for relegation ?

I personally like the system employed in the non-league play offs with the team finishing highest in the league been given home advantage and it being a one off match.

I'd extend the promotion play offs to the top 8 with the following format:

5th v 8th
6th v 7th
3rd v 6th or 7th
4th v 5th or 8th
Wembley Final

For relegation I'd relegate the bottom team and then have the following

18th v 19th
17th v 18th or 19th

I would follow the model throughout the football league with two automatic relegation places between League One and League Two.

It wouldn't extend the season as we already play the same amount of games in the promotion play offs but it would get rid off a lot of season end dead rubbers and give more teams something to play for by awarding home advantage and fewer games for league position I don't think teams would be in a position to coast in that format. it would extend the number of teams involved in the play offs from 4 per league to 9 whilst retaining the same ebb and flow of ups and downs.

Burnley v Watford with the winners going to Leeds in a one off game would have been the result of that format last season, we'd have travelled to Luton in a one off game with the prospect of a trip to Huddersfield for the winners before the final at Wembley where we could have met one of Forest, Sheffield United or Blackburn.

Read the quoted comment I was replying to, which was to suggest the bottom two go down and the next 4 play off for the last remaining relegation spot.

It's 4 teams (17th, 18th, 19th and 20th) playing for 1 safety spot isn't it? So the winner of the play-off would stay up.
