References

Nano nails what a reference should include these days. Were you in full time employment there, were you off sick, did you have a disciplinary record. Pretty much nothing else.
Nowadays they don't contain details of sickness or disciplinary stuff.

It is literally Joe Bloggs worked at X between 01/01/1990 -01/09/2023.

GDPR has made 'confidential' references a thing of the past. Most firms large enough to have an HR department now only give narrow factual references (employment dates, position held) to avoid the risk of legal consequences. If you don't want your current employer to know you're thinking of leaving you could try using former colleagues/bosses.

Our place now has stopped giving references. If I'm asked to do one I have to send it to the references inbox and they will provide dates of employment and that's it.

References saying X is a good worker bla bla bla aren't worth the paper they are written on which is why most employers aren't bothering with them anymore.
Plus the fact if you give a bad reference that costs them the job offer you can be taken to court so it's not worth the trouble of slating someone.

Right I have a reply

They need Two separate references across a Three year work history.

Which for someone who left his previous job in 1999 doesn’t really help much does it?

Their loss unfortunately. Too much hassle to ask another manager. I don’t want to risk anyone at work finding out I want to leave. And I think I’m a bit old for a personal reference.

Would they take a personal reference alongside a work one?

References wouldn't be pursued unless they'd already offered the role and you accepted it.

Honestly, who could be bothered with the hassle of chasing up references for every candidate? It's bad enough reading people's CVs...
