Redcar blast furnace demolition: Maximo Park

Most havent clue how big these things are or what they consist of or that the land for a mile or so just behind sbco will take 5 years remove decades of toxic mire. The full complex would cost national debt to clean up.

Gotta start somewhere.
Get the Blast Furnace down and flog the scrap before it turns to a bucket if rust.

I’m 100% sure you are right about cost though.
And 100% sure that that is why this ridiculous idea about Steel museum’s are being mooted.
Its the same as the Oil companies offshore, not wanting to pull in old rigs and dismantle them.
Saying we should be leaving them for fish to swim around.
Its the Money , they don’t give a monkey’s about the environment.
I’m Half expecting that the Steelworks will be designated a seagull’s nesting site comparable to Holy Island next.

I shouldn’t be giving them idea’s.

I still have no idea why we can’t reopen and make steel?? Surely all these big ticket infrastructure projects require steel??

Why?.
Well its cheaper to bring steel in from abroad.
Has been for decades.
Even Steve Gibson used German steel to build the Riverside.
And the steel was being made barely a goal kick away.
What chance did it have of surviving ?.

Create real jobs. Not denegrat

is it cheaper though? In the long run I mean? Short sighted I think.

Are you not proud to have industrial icons like the Billingham ICI tower for the cameras to fasten on to. Is that not as part of our story as Roseberry Topping?

So by the same token, you have an old dilapidated Garden shed.
Do you keep it for all the memories ?.
Do you not remember the bikes, the lawnmowers, the deck chairs stored in there since the kids were tiny?.
Or do you knock it down ?.

You are basically a luddite matey.

These are old steel and concrete monoliths that have served their purpose.
They are not works if art, no way .
Photographs of their existence will be suffice for any dubious interest our great grandchildren will have of them.
Lets move on eh?.

By the way,Genuine question, did you ever work in the steelworks or ICI?.

Are you up for paying for its upkeep too?.
I have been inside it.
Its an empty bunker....end of.
There are cracks, the concrete is crumbling, there is no point whatsoever in keeping it.
The land around it could not be utilised due to the probability of falling debris for probably a 50m diameter.
Still interested ?.

It's amateur stuff when you hear the views of an indie-rock band that was popular for a week in 2006

Blows my mind everytime

People in future will think that steelmaking on Teesside was a cottage industry. A satellite of Sheffield. That is, if they even know of it's existence. There will be nothing to show the scale of it all.

Never mind ‘move on’ fire it all up. Start making steel again. Create well paid jobs. It’s only cheaper to buy imported steel in the short term. Our economy is screwed because of the over reliance on the hospitality industry, sooner or later people realise it’s not sensible to pay £8 for a coffee and a sandwich. When we lose sites like this we lose ability to bid for steel making opportunities for future projects. Of course to do all this you need a government that gives a flying fukk about this country and is not merely interested in tipping a wink to their mates to invest in the foreign companies that land the contracts. I know some will say- it required investment to be viable- you can’t just reopen. Well I’ll tell you what! It’ll be a fraction of what we spent bailing the banks out after the ‘wealth creators’ jizzed every else’s money up the wall !!!

Theyll talk of how beautiful Southbank and Grangetown are in future. Teessides new gigantic toffee plant with its awe inspiring 10p mix plant fills the skyline. The old Bessemer that was relocated at the former Grenadier site and the old concrete insignicant coke hopper with Dorman Long daubed on the front now a reminder of cheap labour, asbestosis, and lung cancer and early death for generations of families.

It's cheaper so long as you don't count the cost to society to look after the unemployed workers and the long term costs of a poverty ridden society.

Quite simply because it is very difficult to make steel in this country cheaper than places like China for example. The plant at Redcar Iron Works and the Lackenby Steel Works are in a very rundown state and in spite of being mothballed to preserve the assets at tens of millions it's a non-starter because of the massive costs to bring it back. Even when the price of steel was historically high, the 'Works' didn't make an operating profit very often. Interestingly the markets that kept Teesside Steel afloat in its last ten years or so was supplying special steel products for the north sea pipelines and China for construction.

Tell that to Steve Gibson, champion of local industry and general good egg.

As long as its not him paying for British Steel when the old Kaiser’s is cheaper.
