That's what I thought from the discussion. So in this case it was the officials at fault and not VAR?
VAR is inclusive of the officials.

If a game of this magnitude can't be officiated correctly with VAR then the experiment has failed and we should go back to human refs for anything vaguely subjective.

It didn't look that clear to me but in terms of an offside offence it doesn't make much difference. A player can still be penalised for committing an offside offence by:

interfering with an opponent by:
[...]
challenging an opponent for the ball

However the main issue here is whether he was actually in an offside position when the ball was last touched by a team mate.
