Rashford 2 Johnson 0

This doesn't need to be about political point scoring, fair play to the government for implementing this and fair play to Marcus an excellent result all round

It really is about political point scoring, the government fooked up again, showing little to no care over the poorest kids in our society and had to be shamed by a footballer into doing something about it, we shouldn't ever, ever forget that, it's bloody shameful.

Burying their U-turn in with US elections and remembrance Sunday. At least they came to the right decision in the end. I hope all those Tory MPs who defended it and accused Labour of political point scoring and virtue signalling will apologise and admit they got got it wrong.

Only if Central Office tell them to.

What is prycey on about. Starving innocent children is as political as it gets. Johnson was forced into this through public pressure not for any sympathy for the millions his government put into poverty.

Let's not pretend the government made the right decision for the right reasons, far from it.

I'm just happy there will be less hungry kids now and the government made the right decision in the end

That a joke? All the hate and stigma this generated towards genuine families that have been left with the awful realisation that they can't provide for themselves or their kids due to forces out of their control.

Tory MP's tripping over themselves to blame said parents for being in that position, generalising them by stating without evidence, that free school meals vouchers are spent on alcohol, drugs and prostitution.

Not to mention all the "advice" they received on how to live for a week off a £3 "large" chicken and some bread.

This is a disgraceful situation that for the fraction of the billions being spaffed away without a second thought by this government, should never even have been debated let alone campaigned for and rejected twice!

The final insult in this horrid episode, they can't even do the right thing without trying to bury it into the US election and remembrance Sunday.

No not a joke at all, I'm ecstatic that this has been brought in to protect those vulnerable children from hunger. It was disgraceful that it can even be in question by the government in the first place and some of those coming out defending it were rightly hounded. The right decision has been made and we move on now.

And for those children who went hungry over half term last week?

Just because the government have been forced into a second screeching U-Turn by a footballer, does not hide the damage caused, nor does eventually doing to right thing make up for the hardship suffered getting there.

This is very political and the government deserve to be held to account for their disgraceful role in it. To simply say "move on", absolves them from responsibility.

From 'fair play to the Government' to calling them disgraceful in a few posts. As an impressive a u-turn as you'll see.
Yes I will defend my words it was disgraceful that this wasn't implemented straight away and the fact MPs defended it is awful and should have resigned for even doing that and yes fair play to the government for finally doing the right thing, well done to them. I hope this policy stays even after covid-19

Well done to them... Hmmm I don't agree, they deserve no credit for a decision they were forced into. This government are happy to see children starve. You're entitled to your opinion however ridiculous.

Fair enough

how many more good decisions will require celebrity intervention. Bizarrely they fund facebook campaigns to say how celebrities should stick to their singing, acting, football and not politics, but without those people this government would constantly come to the wrong decisions.

I'm starting to think that Lineker, Big Nev Southall, Guy Garvey, Miriam Margolyes, Stormzy, Johnny Marr, Benjamin Zephaniah and Hugh Grant should form the next government, they get the decision right to start with.

BORIS Johnson caved in to Marcus Rashford yesterday — with cash to feed hungry kids.
The PM unveiled a £170million package to ensure the poorest families can pay bills and put food on the table this Christmas.

He also agreed to extend free school meals and holiday activities to cover next Easter, summer and Christmas.

Mr Johnson broke the news to the England footballer in a private phone call minutes after Marcus had helped Manchester United beat Everton.

Rashford’s spokesman said: “He was thrilled and welcomes this announcement. He is pleased the Prime Minister listened and acted.”

The move defuses a month-long row in which the PM was accused of misreading the nation’s mood — although angry Tories were asking why it was not done sooner.

The Covid Winter Grant Scheme will be ring-fenced. An extra £220million will provide holiday activities and free meals for kids throughout next year.

And the Healthy Start voucher scheme payments will rise from £3.10 to £4.25 a week next April.

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey said the package would build on the billions of pounds spent to protect jobs and boost welfare support.

The measures acknowledge two of Marcus’s three demands — free school meals during holidays and the vouchers rise.

He also asked the PM to hold more talks about extending free school meals to every child from a household on Universal Credit

Package protects hungry children, says Therese Coffey, Work and Pensions Secretary -

"THIS government always has been and always will be on the side of families.
We responded to the pandemic with a huge package of support to protect jobs, safeguard livelihoods and bolster the welfare safety net.

But we know some families are still struggling, especially those who lost jobs due to Covid.
As Christmas nears, I am with Sun on Sunday readers who believe helping low-income families is the right thing to do.

As the PM has said, no child should go hungry.

That is why today we are announcing a bumper package of support.

Through the Covid Winter Grant Scheme we are handing England’s local authorities £170million, building on £63million distributed earlier.

Councils are well placed to identify families most in need.

And there is a guaranteed £16billion funding.

Next year from Easter through summer to the Christmas holidays we are rolling out our £220million Holiday Activities and Food programme offering activities and nutritious free meals.

We will donate a further £16million to food distribution charities."

The £20-a-week Universal Credit increase means the poorest ten per cent are no worse off.
