I think that's probably right. Just someone visibly checking that they're okay, and sticking around in sight of these people, can be enough. It’s sad she didn’t want the hassle of reporting it even when offered the chance.
If someone on the carriage had just said “behave eh” to the family, she possibly would have felt she had more support and more confidence in anyone backing her up.
It doesn’t have to be vigilante action or anything, just someone simply acknowledging something untoward is happening.
Like someone else said, just saying hello and chatting to the victim asking if they’re alright etc is often enough to put off the Neanderthals, because they’ll realise their sly actions have been clocked by others on board.
DependsIt always concerns me when people do not step in on instances like this. Especially since the other passengers appear to have noticed it. A female passenger on her own, facing abhorrent behavior. Bunch of no marks.
That would probably be difficult to get and prove. Do they have sound - if not you’d probably be sued for libel.@Wiseman_Vaughn , if I had been on that train, I would have stuck up for her and said something..probably would have cracked their heads together too. Makes my blood boil..lonely female on a train having to put up with racial taunts and comments
Do the trains have cameras nowadays..I would be tempted to get onto LNER for the footage and paste the Neanderthals all over social media for their bosses (if they work) to see.
That's why she didn't proceed. Very difficult to proveThat would probably be difficult to get and prove. Do they have sound - if not you’d probably be sued for libel.
She was involved in another incident many years ago (before my time). The guy was BNP and was prosecuted but it wasn't a pleasant process. I know times have changed a bit but we are no where near where we should be.That sounds horrendous for her, absolutely vile behaviour. It’s horrific she has had to face this.
I know she doesn’t want to report it, would doing so provide some degree of empowerment? Maybe other people on the carriage saw/heard it and may have reported it themselves independently.
Imagine raising your kids like that. They'll be the first to complain when they can't get or hold down a job.
It's still better than the eighties, but it is definately regressing. That starts at the top though. This is the scary thing about this sort of insidious racism isn't it? If you're white you probably won't see the more subtle kind like this. I do genuinely think they are becoming more emboldened though. We, as all countries, have a problem with racism but there was a feeling the situation has been improving since the eighties. This is the first time in a long time it seems to be regressing.
Yeah we've come a long way since then. And I agree things like the pogrom against asylum seekers has helped racists feel more empowered. It's still better than the eighties, but it is definately regressing. That starts at the top though.
