Question for the gig goers

Anyone who goes to gigs regularly on Teesside how do you find out what's on?

Facebook? Twitter? Mailing Lists? Following bands/venues social media? Posters around town?

What works for you?

I am a bit old school, I am on multiple emailing list for venues, promoters and ticket providers. If there was one location I could find get a list of all upcoming gigs in Teesside I would be all over it.
I normally see at least 1 local gig a week in Teesside pre COVID and have not seen any live music since March 2020 and however much I have enjoyed and supported online gigs it’s just not the same.

I'm sure some years ago somebody had a go at setting up a web site that was just for that purpose but it became too much to manage. Such a thing would be ideal though.

Pretty much all of the above, have some mates in bands/promotion/venues, I get the usual event invites on FB plus shouts from other gig photographers too, I'm pretty sure a mate was asking ages ago about setting this up but cant remember who now. Great idea if it was well maintained and up to date, I would certainly be interested.

There is a gig guide in Norwich which had nearly all the Clubs and Pub gigs on for months in advance. It's a shame there is nothing similar around here.

Norwich gig guide looks just like the type of site we need around here. There are great promoters and venues around here but sometimes they don’t get the audience they deserve. Maybe this is the sort of website that that would help drive up greater interes.

There are some great venues as well, the Brickies and the Walnut tree shades had some great tributes on. Never short of seeing a band most nights of the week. Would not know where to start organising one though. Not sure if it's the Band or the venue who places the ad. Could be an interesting venture. I know Rob used to day a verbal gig guide but sooner mentioned it was forgotten.

It looks like the its the bands and venues who place the ads “ All gigs on Norfolk Gig Guide are submitted by the bands and venues”. I am the same as you I wouldn’t know where to start organising this type of site and then to get the buy in of promoters/ venues and bands.

Facebook events plays a big part for me.
How so Rob?- is it notifications from groups/pages you follow or do you manually check pages. There's no end of local Facebook Gig Groups but nowadays so many people use them you can post in a group about an event and hour later another 10 people have done the same and you disappear from view.

Usually Facebook join the group of artists and venues I like, they usually announce gigs swiftly on their page. Rock Garden page gives a heads up to lots of gigs at The Westgarth.
Problem with closed FB groups is you have to be in them to see them. And, as with the RG group, the admin can be very selective about what they post/approve. That group admin posts about his own shows at The Westgarth but wont allow some other shows in the club to be posted. Its his group he can do what he likes but if you rely on the RG group for whats happening locally you'll miss out on some stuff.

That looks really good - I wonder how they collect all the info?

Does a gig guide include all the events at established big venues, locally that would be The Globe, ARC etc and/or just a pub small venue gigs?

I wonder if they list everything or have some kind of quality control? I run a Teesside Gigs group on Facebook but I only allow proper gigs to be posted not someone just rocking up in a pub with a karaoke machine to sing over.

"Anyone who goes to gigs regularly on Teesside how do you find out what's on?"

Here is mine.

Mailing Lists - One of main sources of information. From the likes of yourself, Steve Harland, TKASG etc. Unfortunately they tend to link to Facebook(see below)
Then mailers from the likes of See Tickets telling you there is similar bands to what you like playing near to you and when you look at them the band is playing Brighton or Plymouth. They are a waste of time
Mailers from Veues such as the Sage and various Academy venues.

Twitter- Only from bands I follow. However I only follow Future of The Left so thats limited but have booked shows by FOTL/McLusky after seeing it on Twitter. More luck than following though as I don't use Twitter much.

Facebook - Dont think I have ever booked a band through seeing something on Facebook except for links as noted in Mailing Lists. The format is **** even when you see something of interest when you go back to look at it you have to scroll through loads of dross to find it again. Never seen the Teesside Gigs group on Facebook before but there is not too much info on there but I have "followed" it for future reference.

Following bands - Get e-mails from a few bands I follow but these tend to be bigger bands where you need to book quickly such as Nick Cave, Suede etc.

Venues social media - Dont have enough time or will power to follow venue social media except for Georgian plus TKASG, fastforwardpromotions.co.uk(but not instgram site as I don't use it), and bigfigurepromotions.co.uk but not on a regular basis. Look at The Arc now and again.

Posters around town - can't remember the last poster I saw for a bad. Maybe I'm just not looking.

The Norwich Gig Guide is decent but only seems to include samller venues and possibly pub bands. NE Volume is still on the go but is heavy on Newcastle( http://nevolume.co.uk/listings/ ) and once agin the format is not great IMO. It would be wonderful if there was one site like the Norwich one that you could quickly scroll through.
Maybe if one could be set up promoters could register with the owner and then they could add their own info in a set format. That would save a lot of the day to day workings. Not sure how easy that would be to set up I don't know a lot about these things.
