Why do we call our Olympic squad Team GB?

As Northern Ireland stars compete, surely we should be Team UK? I understand that the official name is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team, but calling it ‘Team GB’ just seems wrong to me. Does anyone know the background?

It shouldn't be 'Team' anything. The name of the country should suffice. Whatever it is.

Are the Isle of Man and CI included?

Yes they are, which makes the Team GB name more odd for me. There needs to be a more inclusive name to reflect these for me. I wondered if the British Overseas Territories were included too. I remember Gibraltar being refused permission to participate in the past, I think Spain were central in bringing about the decision. Can their residents participate under Team GB though I wonder?
