He is probably correct in many ways and Russia's reciprocal strategy is forcing inflation, fuel, food and energy costs through the roof. He has to be hated for what he's doing in Ukraine but nevertheless a very clever man who knows how propaganda works with the masses.

Russia is a strange country. I think too many in the UK judge it too much by Western Standards.

I am reading a new book by Antony Beevor "Russian Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921" available for bargain £15 @ Sainsburys reduced from £30.

During the Russian Civil War - the Whites (anti-Bolshevik) took a village in Central Russia and caught the local Commissar (political leader), they didn't just kill him, they tied and hung him over a large kitchen fire and very slowly cooked him alive for his political beliefs. This was 1919-21. The Reds did horrendous things too such as hanging thousands of White Prisoners of War on public lamp posts in Sevestpol in 1921 when the final White Army was defeated.

The country can be very brutal. Stalin killed thousands of his own possibly millions, but he was genuinely loved by the majority of working class people.

There is only one human species on this planet, homo sapiens, attempting to divide them by their place of birth, hair colour, language, etc. is facile. People are people. Russians are just the same as us. If you characterise the "British" by the acts our ancestors carried out under the banner of Empire I doubt we would appear much nicer than any other arbitrary group of people. People are mostly good but also capable of the most abhorrent acts that no other species on the planet is capable of. We are the plague on the planet and on the other species we share this blue jewel with.

We're disgusting frankly.

I do believe humans are biologically the same, and all are capable of good and bad acts, but they are conditioned to some extent by their environments (social, political, geograhical, religious etc) both over the short, medium and long term. There are differing cultural norms and traits around the World from such conditioning if we ignore this I think we are asking for trouble. It does mean we have to accept what we consider unacceptable, but we have to me careful about making judgements based on how we see the World.

Edit - applied to Russia - we are dealing with a different culture, its not Western Europe and never has been from what I have read about.
