Some 4.3 million children across the UK were in poverty before the Covid crisis in 2019/20, up 200,000 from the year before.

Research for the End Child Poverty coalition shows 37% of North East children below the breadline, up from 26% in five years.

Stagnating wages and freezes to in-work benefits have pushed the region from just below the UK average to the second highest after London, the report by Loughborough University found.

Campaigners are calling on ministers to hike child benefits and scrap plans to cut the £20 weekly Universal Credit increase.

The National Education Union, which is part of the coalition, has joined with the Mirror to demand MPs back a pledge to eradicate child poverty.

Across the UK, 31% of children are growing up in poverty, defined as their household income being below 60% of the median.
