PR will not be in the new Labour manifesto

😬 Oh dear. Seem to recall a few on here very excited by their imagined prospects of electoral reform under Starmer.

I suppose you can say at least he has a track record of consistently lying about his politics. Hopefully this is just another of Starmer's many, many, many lies.🤞

Starmer rules it out.

If he didn’t rule it out though the tories would latch onto it and claim a rallying call to all ‘soft’ Tory voters…..look labour are taking away your freedoms and you’ll never ever get a Tory government ever again. Losing labour critical votes it needs at the next election .

I think Starmer will do a deal with the Lib Dems if elected with a small victory and introduce PR that way.

I could be wrong but PR is the only hope for this country…because the thick English voters buy into the lies the Tory machine (party, media & papers) drip feed them….

NO surprise. Self preservation.

Labour should not support PR: it would be electorally catastrophic for the party. PR would mean the end of majority Labour governments and possibly the Labour party itself.”

Without pr people are forced to vote for 1 of 2 parties sometimes 3

I would vote green if I thought it would count, but it won’t in Redcar so I’ll vote Labour. How is that democracy?
I agree. Political parties need to be more accountable - Political change is needed.

The SDP would be popular in Red Wall seats, given a chance through PR. Funnily enough I've never been keen on PR.

Why do people assume he’s playing 4D chess?

He’s ideologically opposed to it, anyone who thinks he’s playing a calculated game and reveal a load of left wing policies once elected is kidding themselves.

All we need now is for Starmer to oppose abolishing the House of Lords and there’ll be no reason to vote for Labour other than they’ll be a slightly less s*** version of the current government.

Don’t know why Labour would support PR ?

Fptp heavily favours Labour already . A 1% polls lead used to secure a Labour majority , whereas the tories needed a 5-6% poll lead. Think the tories want to address this imbalance , but there is no reason for Labour to want to scrap fptp

One I think of is the 2005 general election . Labour only had 800,000 more votes than the tories but had like 160 more seats than that them

To me the evidence has always been there that Labour would not offer PR

Firstly because they have consistently said so
Second because in a cost of living crisis it’s not going to be a voter priority
Thirdly Labour have divisions and PR would break the party into effectively the Blairite neoliberals and the Corbynista socialists. So it would probably be the end of the Labour party
And lastly we have a 2 party system effectively. The image below shows seats won by party. That’s what Labour would be giving up but I don’t know what they’d gain?

People imagine he's playing multiple games of 4D chess. Remember all those traps he was setting for Johnson in PMQs? None of them were sprung before Johnson left office.

It may be true that PR results in fewer Labour governments but this passage from Burnham:-

“Under our antiquated political system, the Conservative party has been in power for more than two-thirds of the last century without ever winning a majority share of the popular vote,”

suggests that we could end up with more left of Tory coalitions, which may prevent future Labour leaders from being dragged to the right in order to gain power.

It is feel free to vote green. Whether it counts or not is another question. It's still a democracy even though others vote different to you.
If we had PR how would the Greens fare. Serious question.

I despair of people who call FPTP democratic - it is anything but. To answer your question, they would certainly have more MPs than they currently do.
