Post January squad

If we assume that Lenihan, Smith, O'Brien, Forss and McGree all back from injury what do we need? I can only think of a striker as a possible really nice to have. Our squad seems pretty good at the moment.

Smith won't be back from injury until the very end of the season at the earliest, by all accounts.

If O'Brien is back and fit, and played as a midfielder, then I'd say we could use a striker.

A right back.

RVB is doing a job, Smith is injured, Dijksteel can be defensively suspect due to lapses of concentration and anyone else Howson/Mcnair et al would be a stop gap. However, I'd want it to be a permanent, long term type signing, if its just going to be a loan without the greenwood type signing clause, id rather we stick with what we have

We're a striker light.
RB is also a concern: RVB has done well as a stopgap, but I have to think Dijksteel's days are numbered if a man our of position is being favoured over him.
I'm a little disappointed at that as, on the whole , I like Dijksteel. However, if MC doesn't rate him, I won't argue.

One more thought on this: earlier this year I remember having a conversation about whether an expensive loan signing would be preferable to using what money we have on another promising younger player whom we can develop.

I said at the time bringing in another Archer would be ok if we though it would make the difference between playoffs and automatic.
I don't think we're in that position. I'd rather spend what we have on longer term signings than a win-now type siging.

I'd like to see a bit of more long term planning for the summer window.

Out of four CM's one isn't ours, one is about finished at this level, one is deemed by most to be not quite good enough and the other may well be sold to cover our losses.

Out of our three RB options, one is a big earner, out of contract, not great there and plays mainly at CB, one is athletic but heavily out of favour, one is steady enough, but getting on and out all season. The fact we have a young CB playing there suggests Carrick doesn't fancy any other options in the squad starting currently.

Out of our two strikers, one is a young lad who is learning his craft, who does well, is a handful but doesn't score enough, he was also announced as being loaned out, so assume we had another one lined up. The other is a rapid, unpredictabale livewire, who may come good and settle, but isn't really clinical.

We will have the conundrum of which league we are strengthening for I suppose, but we can only really sign players for the league we're in IMO. We saw last season that close but no cigar is a bitter pill to swallow.

12 Nathaniel Adjei - Hammarby - Loan
13 Zack Steffen - Manchester City - Loan
20 Julián Carranza - Philadelphia Union - Loan
29 Sam Greenwood on a permo
31 Ben Johnson - West Ham - Loan

maybe..

17 Paddy McNair - Luton
22 Hayden Coulson - Aberdeen
38 Daniel Nkrumah - Loan

Nat Philips on loan if we can't make Nathaniel Adjei work.

Am I the only person who would still be surprised if CA replicated his goal scoring of last season? Or even close to.

I would have been surprised to see him do it here.

In fairness, he's actually scoring more frequently this season than last: 1 goal every 67 minutes on the pitch, rather than 118 with us.
He's just not been on the pitch very often.

Why hasn't he been on the pitch very often? No idea, but the manager who didn't pick him got the boot.

We're trying to move away from having far to many loans!

I think the only addition will be a premium loan striker from the premier league potentially with a buy clause upon any potential promotion. Well only addition If you don't include a permanent for Greenwood.
If McNair ends up going which I'm doubting we might see some movement for a potential right back with VDB moving into the center back reckoning
