Possible bad news about SA variant

I know I'm a fuqtard but...........

I thought the whole approach of the vaccine development was that the rna protein that was chosen was to build immunity against the part of the virus that built the 'crown' structure? As that is what the 'corona' virus uses to attach to its host, not attack the virus bit which makes you ill?

So any 'corona' style virus would be protected against?
The problem occurs if the virus mutates to be able to destroy the antibody binding mechanism which would cause them to simple “bounce” off the virus cells.

Cheers for that Tommy. The bit below seems more promising.

However, as vaccine distribution ramps up around the world, researchers are seeing early signs that existing vaccines should work with the body’s multifaceted immune system to offer some level of protection from mutated versions of the virus.

“The variants do have changes in the [virus’s] spike protein, but not enough to make the vaccine not protective,” said Arnold Monto, the acting chair of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Vaccine and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, in a January 11 interview with the medical journal JAMA. “It looks like [existing vaccines] should work, and we’ll know more definitively in the next couple of weeks.”

I honestly feel like going upstairs and hanging myself.
What a pointless existence we are currently living with precisely nothing to look forward to.

You have my upmost sympathy, can’t imagine anything more difficult to cope with than serious depression.
Regarding nothing to look forward to or be positive about I have to disagree. I’ve been listening to a podcast about dictators of the 20th century in places like North Korea, Russia and China and compared to the poor folk who lived under those regimes we live in absolute paradise.
This is a miserable and immensely frustrating situation but eventually it will pass.

My interpretation is that the original vaccine will provide some protection initially but may be overwhelmed eventually necessitating a “booster”. Pfizer seem supremely confident that their technology can be easily adapted to the required alterations. The main issue right now is scaling up manufacture but that is always growing so there are a fair few reasons to have some positivity and not let the doom and gloom merchants, (the title of this thread is a disgrace) who seem intent on dragging everyone down as far as possible, overwhelm this board.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows but equally it’s not as bad as some would have you believe.

Not sure the thread title is particularly clever either to be honest.

I've no problem with people discussing and sharing reports like this, but everyone is struggling mentally to varying degrees right now. Having "it looks like the virus might win" staring everyone in the face on the front page might have a bigger impact on some than the OP realises.

Maybe worth everyone just considering that some are really struggling with this, so if we are sharing "bad news" to try and do so in as balanced, non sensationalist way as possible?
Agreed. Other people have had pelters for similar threads.

Maybes we should have a positive threads only weekend?

The media reporting has been terrible and full doom from the start. The number of "what if" segments popping up on the news is shocking. They should report the facts and not stories.
The UK, and global, mainstream media have a lot to answer for. For the last 12 months they have fed the public with fear. They are too politicised and, like our politicians, are more interested in point scoring than providing facts. I know they have viewers to attract and papers/subscriptions to sell, but they have played a big part in where we find ourselves as a country.

I'll let Rob make the decision as to wether to pull it or not @parnabyscrosses. This is a board for adults, I'm only reporting what is in the media which is what thousands of threads before this have done and thousands after will do.

And for those preaching about anxiety etc maybe don't be calling me out for posting my fears - speaking about things that worry you can help anxiety too. Mental health isn't a one way street.

If you would like a source unfortunately the easiest one to find is the Daily Mail, a publication I do not like to link or usually read. But when coupled with Patrick Vallance expressing concerns and it being on the News At 10 I thought that the point was valid enough to post.

And as I say, I hope it's rubbish and the key will be in the coming month if anyone in the UK gets the SA strain and ends up early poorly.

My post isn't to scare, it is to encourage debate and for people to highlight hopefully something I have missed that makes this news very wrong.

My job includes the health service and specifically mental health.
I have knowledge related to my field, but I wouldnt want to speculate about some of the bollix out there about the virus.
It causes more problems than it solves - as witnessed on here.
Just stay safe, look after your loved ones, support those struggling through no fault of their own and lets look forward (y)

Your intention might not be to "scare" people - which Im sure is genuine - but it clearly does scare people - as witnessed on here and negatively impacts mental health.
There`s enough "discussion" (speculation) out there already - disinformation, unsubstantiated rubbish and complete nonsense.
Its about staying safe, looking after each other and looking forward.

"Covid could potentially win"

What's all that about? I don't have an issue with the topic as it is incredibly relevant and I'd agree it's concerning but that headline is worded, I hope not deliberately, to incite fear and worry.
