Positives

Positives are we made loads of chances first half. Negatives, just like the first team, we could not take them . There’s a theme here…

Snappy football looks good but if there’s no end product, there’s little point
Biggest negative for me, might be confidence for some of the younger lads, and particularly Coburn and Hamilton. And then Engel second half

Positive is I have learned never to go to an early round cup game. I had not expected 9 changes and feel ripped off.

With that starting line up it was pretty obviously we wanted out of the cup tonight but I’d rather it wasnt 5-0 at home .
A win at Cardiff and Preston and that’s us averaging 2pts a game and we can start to get a bit more optimistic

If we’d played most of our first team and won, but lost a couple of important players through injury, we’d be in a worse position than we are now, though it wouldn’t feel like it.
Short term pain, long term gain.

That’s putting a spin on it Mandelson would be proud of.

Gilbert was the only player that could hold his head up. Faded when moved left when Conway came on, but the game was lost by then.

I thought Hart looked a little wobbly early on but did OK.

As above no injuries to first teamers...

The positives for me is Gilbert and Hamilton will both be very good players with more game time and first team experience both look like raw talents that will come very good so I would be reluctant to let Gilbert leave on loan as I think he could be a good player for us this season if given the opportunity.

That is the point of the night - Very poor from Carrick. The kid at centre half will have nightmares about tonight. He should never have been put in that position and in that team - regardless of injuries etc.

Apart from Clarke, he's the only fit centre back at the club right now.

If you're not going to play him in a fairly meaningless cup match when there are literally no other centre backs available, when are you going to?
We spent a substantial fee to bring him here this summer, cup matches are always used for blooding young players, absolutely nothing wrong with itm

We were never going to risk starting all 4 of our remaining fit defenders at once with a far more important league match to come on Saturday.

Stoke also put out a heavily changed side full of young players.

It's not meaningless when you lose five nil ..... And surrounding him with other kids clearly didn't work..... There were plenty of fit senior pros who could step in.....too many kids throughout the team..... There is losing and it doesn't really matter and there is getting hammered five nil with a team of kids.... In my opinion that does matter to the kids ... Perhaps not to some supporters.....poor stuff

Brynn is our second choice keeper and isn't a kid, Clarke is 27 and Ayling is 33.

So he certainly wasn't surrounded by kids at the back.

McCormick, performed better than our current first choice 25 year old left back in Engel, who had an absolutely appalling time when he came on and was one of the main reasons that it ended up as 5-0.

McCabe had a better game than the 27 year old Barlaser.

Finch is a kid, but he came in to replace a player that people have been slagging off all season.

Hamilton arguably is a kid, but he was 100% brought in to play with the first team and absolutely everybody would have expected him to start tonight.

Alex Gilbert isn't a kid, neither is Coburn.

People were also complaining last season that Carrick wasn't giving enough academy players a chance in cup matches.

Footballing age is important brynns footballing age is younger because he’s a keeper and keepers don’t mature until 30.

Gilbert’s football age is probably 20 as he’s only played about 10 career games in senior football

Hamiltons is very young despite having a champs league appearance

Less cup games to play..

Brynn - character building
Ayling - was brilliant, we missed him
Hunt - he’s very very very young
Clarke - looked very strong
McCormick - looked injured straight away
Barlaser - been impressed with him of late
McCabe - like an 18yo Hackney
Hamilton - a very tidy midfielder.. very!
Gilbert - very impressed.. again!
Finch - would respond well to a loan move
Coburn - had many chances

Jones - love the guy!
Dijksteel - he’s back!
Morris - a solid midfield display
Conway - he’s gonna do well
Engel - things can only get better
