Positives

Really like the way we pass the ball around in the opposition half.
The longer we do this the better our understanding should be.
(rewind a few years and we regularly went 90 minutes without recording a single shot on target)

We are still only 3 points off the play-offs with injured players starting to return.

In the meantime here's some teams enduring a trickier time than us:

Birmingham City
Sheffield United
Man Utd

So many more positives than negatives. We've been superb going forward in the last 2 games. Also looked far better at the back.

The only real 'negative' today was the result. It's hard to knock the actual performance. We looked really good.

We've been really impressive. Yet clearly only scoring once from the many chances over the last 2 games is an issue. Yet we are playing without an actual CF.

Although that still isn't a free pass for missed chances. The ones we've missed are not even half chances. You don't need to be a CF to put them away.

I think everyone in the squad knows exactly what’s expected of them and how we play, “our system” as it were. We are just lacking that killer touch that we had in the side last season with the likes of Akpom and Archer at the moment. If we can correct that with the addition of even just one decent goal scorer then we could be flying.

I would be considerably more worried if we hadn’t made opportunities, had a terrible decision against us and were at full strength.

Even Man City lose shock games. The important part for me is that we make enough chances and play football I want to watch.

We need a player to find some clinical form or bring someone with pedigree/class in because that’s all that was missing yesterday.

We’ve signed players for development and have a lot of players missing, that will affect our consistency.

I would be more worried if I was Rotherham.

If Mr Carrick was undecided about getting a really good striker (or 2) into Boro then he certainly knows now.

Defensively we looked more solid than we have of late. That's a positive.

We played pretty well just failed to score it's also a positive.

I did look at it xG yesterday and whilst most people know I don't rate it as a stat, it suggested we didn't miss loads of sitters. It was 1.48.

I thought it would have been higher, over 2.

The 'penalty' wouldn't have registered anything on xG, as it wasn't a chance on goal? That would add nearly 1 on if correctly refereed.

Positives

We had 19 goal attempts to Rotherham's 3 - the game should have been a 2-0 win to Boro based on the stats. My guess is around 80% of Championship teams will not create 19 chances @ Rotherham and 90% will not have a plus chances of 16.

It was a clear penalty, the most obvious one not given I have seen in a Boro game for a long time.

The Rotherham goal was clearly a cross that 99 times out of 100 would not have resulted in goal.

More game time for McGree.
