From 2003 - 2010 this could have been a Premiership fixture! Both clubs could hold there own against any club, though fortune can take a down - turn and it happened in its own unique way for both the Trotters and Pompey.
The last time they played a Premier match was a 2-2 back in April 2010.
20,000 at The Reebok witnessed Bolton score two in two minutes [Ivan Klasnic 26 / Kevin Davis 28]. It was the year Pompey were relegated and reached the F.A Cup Final. Avram Grant was in the hot seat for the south coasters whilst Owen Coyle was in charge at Bolton. Aruna Dindane gave Portsmouth hope, replying with two goals in the second half [54 + 68 minutes], but at the season`s end Pompey were heading through the Premier trap-door.
Pompey were in financial trouble and all players had the "For Sale" sign around their necks [Observer April 24th 2010]. They were placed in Administration in March 2010 had been deducted 9 points. After a roller coaster 7 years in the top flight, they "did a Sunderland" [only worse!] and plummeted to the fourth tier of English football. Huge problems with liquidation, High Court appearances by the Clubs Accountants, appeals and a whole mess of procedures and negotiations with debtors and HMRC saw all the players leave the club, Managers changed like buying tickets on a bus and left fans wondering if their club was going to become nothing more than a memory.
After a completely forgettable turbulent period in their history, Pompey were promoted from EFL League 1 in 2017 [Division Four]. The resurgence accompanied financial stability, with one highlight being their 2019 Victory against Sunderland in the EFL Trophy Final 5-4 on penalties [2-2 FT].
Pompey See Off Sunderland In The Checkatrade Trophy Final in 2019.
Tonight is a huge game for both clubs: desperate to keep up the momentum and head into the New Year further ahead of the play-off pack. Bolton with a game in hand could take top spot from Pompey. Its that close.
Portsmouth Top Scorer is Colby Bishop [11 goals + 2 assists]. Nottingham born Bishop began his career with Notts County and signed for Pompey in July 2022. Last season he was Player of The Season and at 27 appears to have been a solid investment at Fratton Park.
* Bishop is out tonight with an ankle injury.
