KO 20:00 hrs Fratton Park

From 2003 - 2010 this could have been a Premiership fixture! Both clubs could hold there own against any club, though fortune can take a down - turn and it happened in its own unique way for both the Trotters and Pompey.

The last time they played a Premier match was a 2-2 back in April 2010.
20,000 at The Reebok witnessed Bolton score two in two minutes [Ivan Klasnic 26 / Kevin Davis 28]. It was the year Pompey were relegated and reached the F.A Cup Final. Avram Grant was in the hot seat for the south coasters whilst Owen Coyle was in charge at Bolton. Aruna Dindane gave Portsmouth hope, replying with two goals in the second half [54 + 68 minutes], but at the season`s end Pompey were heading through the Premier trap-door.

Pompey were in financial trouble and all players had the "For Sale" sign around their necks [Observer April 24th 2010]. They were placed in Administration in March 2010 had been deducted 9 points. After a roller coaster 7 years in the top flight, they "did a Sunderland" [only worse!] and plummeted to the fourth tier of English football. Huge problems with liquidation, High Court appearances by the Clubs Accountants, appeals and a whole mess of procedures and negotiations with debtors and HMRC saw all the players leave the club, Managers changed like buying tickets on a bus and left fans wondering if their club was going to become nothing more than a memory.

After a completely forgettable turbulent period in their history, Pompey were promoted from EFL League 1 in 2017 [Division Four]. The resurgence accompanied financial stability, with one highlight being their 2019 Victory against Sunderland in the EFL Trophy Final 5-4 on penalties [2-2 FT].

Tonight is a huge game for both clubs: desperate to keep up the momentum and head into the New Year further ahead of the play-off pack. Bolton with a game in hand could take top spot from Pompey. Its that close.

Portsmouth Top Scorer is Colby Bishop [11 goals + 2 assists]. Nottingham born Bishop began his career with Notts County and signed for Pompey in July 2022. Last season he was Player of The Season and at 27 appears to have been a solid investment at Fratton Park.

Match Preview - Pompey
1702321891150.png

It is the time of year when you struggle to sleep because of all the anticipation, but the big day has finally arrived.

No, forget about Christmas – it’s first versus second in League One as Pompey welcome Bolton to Fratton Park (8pm kick-off).
The magnitude of the occasion can be experienced by the rest of the nation, with the Sky Sports cameras broadcasting the contest live.
John Mousinho’s men briefly relinquished top spot after losing to Blackpool in their last south coast outing, only to return to the summit with victory at Northampton nine days ago.

Their opponents are currently three points behind, but with a better goal difference and are enjoying a fine run of form.
A goalless draw at Oxford in their most recent league fixture is the only time that Wanderers have failed to win in the past 11 matches
It is a run that as well as seeing them apply pressure on Pompey, has taken Ian Evatt’s side into the third round of the FA Cup and last 16 of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

You have to go all the way back to October 7 to find their last defeat – a 3-1 home reverse against Carlisle.
And Pompey fought from behind to win by the same scoreline in the most recent meeting between the teams back in February, courtesy of Ryley Towler’s brace and a Colby Bishop goal at Fratton Park.

TEAM NEWS
Pompey are missing Tino Anjorin (hamstring), Colby Bishop (ankle), Josh Dockerill (knee), Connor Ogilvie (ankle), Regan Poole (knee) and Anthony Scully (knee).

But Joe Morrell is available again after completing a two-match ban for collecting his second red card of the season against Blackpool.
Bolton are close to having a fully-fit squad to choose from, with George Johnston (knee) and Dan Nlundulu (hamstring) the only absentees.

Portsmouth v Bolton Wanderers - Team news, Ian Evatt update

Wanderers will be at close to full strength at Portsmouth, with Ian Evatt urging them to seize a chance to shine under the nation’s gaze.

With no other professional fixture scheduled in the UK and Sky Sports cameras poised to screen the action at Fratton Park, the Bolton boss hopes his squad can continue in the type of form which saw them claw back a hefty points deficit on their hosts since the end of October.

Evatt said recently that his players had not been given enough credit for the quality of football they played – and though he picked up the November Manager of the Month award, goalkeeper Nathan Baxter missed out on the player’s prize.

Just long-term casualty George Johnston (knee) and Dan Nlundulu (hamstring) will be missing on Monday night, where Wanderers get the opportunity to showcase their improvement this season.

“I just want the players to be recognised for what they are doing,” Evatt said. “It is not about me, not about staff, pats on the back. I just want my players to be praised and rewarded for some of the things they are doing at the moment because it is a really high level, elite. When we do see things like that then I think they deserve the plaudits.

“That said, we are happy to fly under the radar also. We are happy just to keep being consistent and doing things the correct way.
“At the end of the day, the only people who matter are me, the players, the rest of the staff and the fans, everyone else outside of our football club is irrelevant.

“We just want to keep pushing in the right direction, working hard, and getting the best possible results for Bolton Wanderers.”

Evatt collected his second successive Manager of the Month award and to be in line for the hat-trick would most likely need a win against Portsmouth – something Bolton have not managed since 2009.

“If it is aligned with getting the right results, so be it,” he said. “My focus can be nowhere other than Portsmouth. It can’t afford to be because they are a really good team and it is going to be a huge test for us.

“It really isn’t about me – it is about the wider club. The players have put in a huge amount of effort and they are executing what we are asking them to do really well.

“Individual awards are really good but it is the collective results that mean more to me.”

Luke Matheson returned to training at the end of last week after pulling out of the squad to face Port Vale in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy with a minor hamstring problem.

Victory in that game booked Wanderers a last 16 tie at either Accrington Stanley or Lincoln City, which will be played in early January.
Both Paris Maghoma and Jack Iredale are currently on four yellow cards - with one more enough to earn them a one-game suspension.
