Port Vale away

I was at the game when we played played Stoke at Port Vale in January 1975 after the roof was blown off one of Stokes'stands,we lost 1-0 on my 19th birthday then after the game the coach trip from ICI I travelled with took us to Batley Variety Club for the night.

Exciting draw though it is if Cardiff in 2008 taught us that you cant take anything for granted. They and their crowd will be massively fired up for the tie and they are better than Exeter.

About the same as Exeter aren't they? One point between them.
Completely agree it's not a gimee though, we definitely shouldn't be complacent!

Didn't Ricard miss from six yards out with an open goal? I thought Merson scored, could be wrong.
Their fans tried to get over a high wall/barrier but were soon pushed back over by the Boro fans playing wackamole.

I went in 1998 I think it was a Friday evening in late April - we were lucky to win 1-0.

Slightly strange location for a professional football club - a bit like Linthorpe Village, no obvious town centre, a mix of Edwardian housing, a few factories, some leafy streets, quite enclosed as its in a slight dip in the land (I expect where the name Vale comes from). Port probably comes from canal landings to pick up newly made pottery in the Victorian era.

I am not sure about the draw - if we get through its a great draw - if we don't we have missed the opportunity of a glamour match and the cash.

Another away draw - five on the trot!
It was on the Friday night. When we arrived, I couldn’t get why all the Police were in riot gear. We soon found out why though. The away end was like being in Beirut, bottles, coins, bricks and anything else that was throwable came flying in.
My mate was hit by a glass bottle.
I also remember Boro fans taking over one of their pubs close to the ground, when again it kicked off because the Darthveda clad law brigade wouldn’t allow any home fans in, and it was their pub 🤣

Remember Burton too more recently. I know it will be unpopular, but if I had to I would trade promotion for another cup final! (Edit a cup final is preferable to promotion for an old git like me!)

It's funny that even Port Vale fans seem to think they're a bigger club than Bournemouth.

No idea how they've possibly came to that conclusion, but it's funny.

Woolwich Arsenal. They moved north of the river later and got rid of the Woolwich part of the name.
Except that they haven’t been called Woolwich Arsenal since the early years of the last century, and in the early years of the last century they appeared in the football league alongside Burslem Port Vale so I don’t see how that works as a distinction.

Lets remember this is the Boro we are talking about here, history has a nasty habit of repeating itself with us. Potential banana skin.
Still the 2nd best draw we could have had (obviously a home tie would have been the best).

One of the most popular measures of our “bigness“ on here is our average historical league position/rank on the all-time list by league position. Port Vale undoubtedly beat Bournemouth on that metric as well.

Of course, by the ridiculous metric of who is currently highest in the league, Bournemouth beat us both and have done for some time.

Haha changed.

Anybody else go to Port Vale in January 1976 when we played Stoke City. Their ground was damaged by wind so they played the game at Vale Park - we lost 1-0 and it was just before our second leg st Maine Road in the League Cup Semi
Yep I did. My main memory of the game was regarding Alan Willey. He was a terrible player for us, really shocking. But during the game he got the ball in our half and headed towards their goal weaving around what seemed like half their team. We were in utter disbelief, until he got to the 18 yard box, tripped over his feet and failed to get a shot off. Think he went off to America shortly after where he was a big hit I think.
