Plumbing question

Anyone successfully fitted one of those isolation valves onto water feed which doesn't require water being turned off?? Got a dripping tap and when kitchen was last done they fitted those cheap plastic valves - is there a way of turning them when they've not been used for years?? Sorry, that's two questions...

Why can't you turn the water off? Can you not turn it off at the meter outside?

If you can't turn the water off, but need to isolate the water before the broken isolater you could use a freeze kit on the pipe, or maybe even a squeeze off, if it's plastic. Be wary of these mind, as if it goes wrong, and you can't turn the water off, you could have a very big (and wet) problem on your hands.

You could maybe try and spray some WD40 on something which will not turn, might still work on plastic.

Cold water turns off ok but hot feed is proving very troublesome... I've seen the freezer devices and they might do the trick. Not keen on draining the whole system tbh .... and actually am not keen on messing about with it just before Christmas :D

As Andy said above, why can't you turn the water off, you must have a stop tap to do this inside the property.

Any chance of a picture of the valve that needs turning off.

You won't have to drain the whole system, it is a matter of turning your stop tap off with cold taps open. The water should stop after a few minutes and you can get to work.

You won't need to drain the radiators, for a hot tap, they're seperate systems (or should be).

Turn the cold water off at your stop tap under the sink (or the meter outside), turn the hot and cold water taps on (downstairs) which will drain all/most of it, and just cut the pipe and fit a push fit plastic isolator (that has a metal screw head).

Waiting till after crimbo is a good shout though, if you're not used to this sort of thing (and risking screwfix not being open).
