Player autographs

My kids talked me into waiting back after the game with them to get some player autographs and selfies.

It was quite good actually, seeing the ground empty and people start to wind down after the game, stewards and the like.

We did ok and got Jones, Glover and a few others in the massively overpriced Boro autograph books - good on them for coming out and spending time in the rain with the kids and bigger kids like me.

I was talking to my wife tho and in all the years we had season tickets (for 13 years, Robbo era onwards) we never once stayed after the match to hang around. We had full on legends of the game, Juno, Barmby, Merson, Rav, Viduka, Boksic, Schwarzer etc. and never once did anything apart from leg it to the car/pub bang on the final whistle. We can't think of any friends who ever stayed behind either.

Was it a thing back in the day to get autographs or to hang around to see the players and did we miss out?

There were usually a few people hanging around for players arriving.

My dad took me to get my FA Cup final shirt signed by the team in the 1990s. One of the stupidest things I did as a child was to wear the thing and spill food all over it, necessitating a wash...

I remember staying behind regularly at Ayresome in the 80s to get all of the autographs. i even used to have the cheek to ask the away team players to print their name because I didnt have a clue who they were. I remember a very nice Mark Venus obliging and having a little giggle to himself at the temerity of it. There might have been 10 of us, at the most, waiting after the match. I have no idea how many do it now.

There was always a bit of a weird fella who was there every time I was - he would have a bag full of old shoot magazines and programs for the away players to sign. And he had a beard. Apologies if it was you or your dad.
