Play offs and penalties

I've always thought (even in the semi finals) the team that finished higher in the league should be handed the victory, without extra time. A bit of an advantage for the team which did better in the 46 games beforehand.

Not really what tge thread is about but I would change the play off format to reflect more where you finish.
Team that finishes 3rd qualifies for the final.
The team in 4th has a one off home tie against the winners of 5th, at home to the 6th in a one off game.
Every team has something to play for hopefully rather than as we did strolling through the last few games ?

Isn’t this how the National League play offs work? It makes a lot of sense to me, and as you say, each place is worth fighting for.

Dont like penalty shooyouts. I would like to see it a rule that if it goes to extra time that both teams have to remove 2 players. This will create more space on the pitch in which to creaye and score. Too many teams defend their way through extra time hoping for pens.

Northern League this year was one leg semi final, 3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th. Both games went to penalties, the away side winning. The final was 5th v 6th, it went to penalties with the way side winning.

I personally dislike penalty shoot outs.
I'd rather an alternative.

Replays are much better, but I understand the practical difficulties, cost ramifications and media demands for instant drama.
They won't come back, but for purely sporting reasons I think they are better.

I don't get the concept. Either have the play offs or don't. What you suggest implements a weird half and half for me. With the play off format league position counts for nothing once it starts, if you want to consider league position just forget the concept.

All about opinions and preferences of course

Penalties are a total bag of bollox, but from the start of the season these are the rules.

Is what it is until a better solution is thought of 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

The League Cup Final against Leicester was the day I decided cup final replays are nonsense. It’s the final. The big occasion. People have spent a small fortune to be there. Then at the end…..nothing. Let’s play again at an inferior venue sometime later. I’d rather it had gone to pens and we lost than having the weekend turn into a non-event.

World Cups and European competitions don’t go to replays. Neither do cricket matches, tennis, golf, etc. I wonder why that is if replays are such a good idea.
I'm with Corcaigh on this, losing on penalties takes some getting over.

The problem with finals is that teams don't want to lose so you get less risk taking and it's more likely to go to extra time and penalties. The best games are those like our European games against Steau where because of the away goals rule meaning there could be no draw. One team has to score to win.

I have no suggestion for how to achieve that, especially in a knockout competition.

I’ve always thought a weird solution to the penalty shootout conundrum is to have the penalties before the game starts, then they only count if the games still level after extra time. That way it’s always the result of the game which decides the outcome ultimately.
It would also mean that the players who missed wouldn’t have the same ignominy for not scoring their penalties.

Wouldn't that make the team who won the pens just try to hang on grimly for a draw?

yeah i suppose that could happen, the jeapordy of that would be sitting too deep could be a teams undoing. It could also mean a team who would have been defensive (like Coventry) in normal circumstances would have to be attacking if they lost the pre game shoot out.
