A spilled industrial pipe has forced the closure of a carriageway on one of the region’s busiest routes.

Motorists are being warned of potential delays following the closure of the westbound carriageway of the A66 at 1.25pm today (Wednesday, June 28).

The 20m-long, 1.5-diameter section of pipe was spilled from a lorry just past the Shepherdson Way junction, between North Ormesby and Cineworld.

Cleveland Police and Middlesbrough Council’s Highways team are at the scene, diverting traffic off the A66 at the junction.

Lengthy closure expected.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “This is likely to be a lengthy closure as a crane will be required to lift the section of pipe, and repairs will need to be carried out to the carriageway.

“Where possible we would advise motorists to avoid the area until further notice, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Looking at the pics and the video its a miracle no-one was killed or injured

Someone needs to be prosecuted for this.

A66 CARRIAGEWAY REMAINS CLOSED TO ALL FOR PIPE REMOVAL (PRESS RELEASE)

Part of the A66 remains closed as work continues to remove a huge industrial pipe dropped from a lorry.

The incident on the westbound carriageway of the busy route happened on Wednesday afternoon, and the closure is expected to remain in place for a number of days. The 20m-long section of pipe weighing more than 40 tonnes was spilled from a lorry just past the Shepherdson Way junction, between North Ormesby and Cineworld.

Traffic management systems are currently in place to divert traffic off the A66, which will remain closed until the pipe can be removed.

The removal operation may also require the temporary closure of the eastbound carriageway. Work to repair the damaged road surface will be carried before it can re-open.

Further updates will be provided via Middlesbrough Council’s website and social media channels.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “This is a complex operation and this section of the westbound carriageway of the A66 is therefore likely to be closed for a number of days.

“A crane will be used to lift the section of pipe, before repairs can be carried out to the carriageway.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible until further notice, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Forgot about this on the way to work and had to redirect and drive through North Ormesby.
