Phillips

I thought he did ok last night.

Generally he has been very good for England and him and Rice are a good partnership. After his early booking it seemed to me he took a back seat and let Rice, Bellingham etc do what they wanted and he filled in for them around that. Smart, unsung, bit Mustoe-esque is Philips usually. He always makes himself available for the man on the ball so anyone under pressure has a release, he gives it to better players, he's strong in the tackle and players going forward can do so with freedom knowing he will always fill in and place himself in a nuisance position for the opposition on the counter. He allows others to play. He was lucky not to get two yellows, but at the same time he didn't really deserve a sending off. Ref was good and used some judgement. One more foul and he'd have gone, but Southgate was smart and subbed him.

He does need game time, but he'll get it over the course of the season. We might be grateful we have some players who have been underused come the summer, rather than 50+ hard games leaving them drained.

Guardiola signed him. It's fair to say he must be pretty good.

As with Maguire needs to leave in January and play regularly then probably worthy of a squad place. There’s a young English player getting picked over him at City at the moment isn’t there? Not watched them much this season so may be playing another position.

What annoyed me was the amount of fouls by Italians where they just push someone over from behind, no attempt for the ball yet never yellow cards. Also the block on Foden in the box, maybe not a penalty but obstruction, you never see indirect free kicks in the area any more, has there been a rule change? Its either penalty or no penalty.
Really disappointing how just niggly the Italians have become. At least Gentile would leave you some nice stud marks or a spell in plaster as a souvenir.
