Pesky lefty BBC

Definitely worse now and yep, easy to say journalists should speak out but easier said than done when it'll probably cost you your job or even career.

It's not like it's a clear cut scandal she's called out, it's all smoke and mirrors stuff that's easy for the powers that be to dismiss as just her perception of things etc.

She's spoken out now at least, I doubt it'll get much traction though.
It will get traction, but only with those who know it was going on already, or those who had the sense to realise 1 v 1 doesn't reflect the consensus of expert opinion.

The problem is, it won't get traction with the others, and it's those who need to see it, and more importantly, understand it.

I get the impression the BBC are desperate to appear representational of every different cultural group in the UK. I agree it is good that no one is excluded, but their front of house image is now often over represented with some cultural groups.

They do not want to be seen as white, middle class, well educated (Oxbridge Russell Group Universities, male, South east based organisation which was their image for many years). A sort of branch of the Home Office.

I don't expect the FOH image to reflect the senior managerial ranks. which would not have radically changed over the years.

Politically I do see the BBC as fairly neutral, but in the past they have shown political bias towards supporting British Governments at key times such as Covid, Northern Ireland, Miners Strike, Iraq. The BBC is ultimatley part of the establishment and don't want to rock the general status quo, hence with Brexit its very much we are in shock attitude how could this happen etc.

The oft used attack that the BBC is run by a bunch of woke lefties and is politically biased against the Tories can be consigned to the dogturrd bin where it belongs, once and for all.
I’d hazard a guess that Maitlis was well placed to know such things.

‘“Put this in the context of the BBC Board, where another active agent of the Conservative party – former Downing Street spin doctor, and former adviser to BBC rival GB News – now sits, acting as the arbiter of BBC impartiality.”’

And for those who will say ‘pffft….The Guardian…..’ Watch what she said for yourself, if The Guardian reporting is too lefty for you.

It was always gaslighting by the tories. Whatever they say, the truth is almost always the exact opposite.

Yes the BBC as a whole can be fairly left leaning, but news and current affairs has always been conservative and in recent years bordering on fascistic in its use of propaganda and controlling the rhetoric.

Well done Maitlis for exposing this, but where does it go from here, how can this be challenged and changed without the need to kick the government out first? I'd expect Maitlis's comments to be challenged by some of those very conservatives figures embedded in this raping of democracy, people like Fiona Bruce whose husbands company earned millions advertising tory government policies and propaganda.

Right wing and comedy don't exactly go hand in hand.
Geoff Norcott claims to be a right wing comedian, but he's not really.
I always felt Norcott was playing a character, a smug, east ender looking down at the left. His character often being the butt of the joke. Bit like how Alf Garnett was the butt of the joke, not black people.

Punching up is far easier to get a laugh out of than punching down. The establishment are an easy target and even Labour politicians are part of the establishment.
I'd say it's far more humane. Few labour politicians are truly establishment. To understand the establishment you need to follow the money and there are far more Tory MPs that are from old money, landed gentry and hedge fund billionaire background than labour ones. In fact there are very few that even come close to being establishment.

Tells you a lot about why the BBC repeatedly ran the anti-semite stories, the painting Corbyn as a communist etc. I mean he's another Tory, brother of a Tory MP, another prominent brexiteer and to make it worse he's a fan of dirty Leeds.

agree, i think he's tried to find himself a bit of a niche, and is playing a character accordingly

There'll be plenty who don't get the joke mind.

Same with Al Murray "the pub landlord". There'll be some who like him because they have the same views as the "character" and who completely miss the point (which is, ironically, taking the **** out of people like them).

The BBC is certainly uncomfortable about anything that is deemed radical be it from the right or the left.

If there were a politician they would be a Rory Stewart or Tony Blair.

I know on issues in the disabled community such a refusing people disabled benefits, the BBC would run stories than other media channels shyed away from. ITV preferred programmes on benefit fraud. I admired the BBC for this.

It was quoted on Twitter just the other day that the BBC had said that the last time inflation was this high Michael Foot was the Labour leader.

wow - not Margaret Thatcher was PM!

The announcement of the death of MT was interesting - for a few hours it was hailed as a day a former great had gone. The next day there was stuff about rejoicing in the streets of Barnsley and a figure than split the Nation. The latter was a fairer reflection to me.
