Perez replaces Albon at Red Bull

Yes Carlos slim (mr mexico) is basically his personal sugar daddy which is a factor as well.

So yes doesn’t hurt.

“ Some controversy surrounded Perez initially, as he is sponsored by the telecommunications giant Telmex, which is owned by the world's richest man and fellow Mexican Carlos Slim. Slim's patriotism towards Perez and his £44bn personal fortune made some suggest that Perez was a pay driver - someone who may not be good enough to race in F1, but who can bring enormous funding to help his team improve.

Being part of Ferrari's young driver programme changed this view of Perez, however, and he went on to score 14 points in the 2011 season, with his best finish being seventh place in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.”

A very good driver, who brings sponsership. Its a good move for both the team and the driver.

Albon stays with the team on as test driver. He's had an awful season, and was promoted up into the main team too soon it seems.

Had to be done, Perez is one of the best drivers on the grid and will be just as good as Max in that car. Difficult one for Merc if he does start to really perform, having Bottas in that car might become a problem for them next season.

I hope you’re right but I’m not sure he will be just as good as max next season. It seems the red bull is suited to a specific driving style.

And there’s really nothing wrong with bottas as a second driver. More often than not he does exactly what is necessary.
I don’t envisage him suddenly finishing 4th every weekend next season. If he does then Mercedes have conceded their considerable pace advantage and it’s a team issue rather than a bottas issue

Bottas is perfect to have as a second driver, if you have Hamilton as 1st choice. Bottas is nearly as quick in qualy, but over the course of the season he is not as good as Hamilton, so the team do not have a repeat of the Roberg situation.

I suspect that Russell will take Botttas seat in 2022 though.

Doesn’t he bring a bundle of cash with him too ?
Yeah. I mean technically all the drivers do nowadays (how much sponsorship does Hamilton bring to Mercedes, almost certainly Bose and probably helped with the Hugo Boss sponsorship). But yes, Perez is a "pay driver" in that he brings a lot of daddy's money to the track. He gets looked down on for that.

In my opinion it's the right move though. Sad for Albon but he simply hasn't delivered. You always get compared against your team mate in f1 which is almost unfair on him given how talented Max is but if you compare Albon results with Perez this year he simply hasn't delivered. Perez finished above him and thats not good enough given Albon has arguably the better car. Albeit this year was primarily on tracks that suit the pink Mercedes rather than the more nimble red bull.

I'm just glad Perez has a drive. He's too talented not too and if he didn't have a drive it would show there was something wrong with the current system.

I thought he may move to indy if he didn’t get an F1 seat.
Lots of changes for next season though. The mclaren mercs with Danny ric should be intriguing as well as sainz switches frok
Orange to red along with the old master back at Renault to stir things up in midfield.

plus the return of one of the famous names in motor sport with nick making his F1 bow at haas.

just a shame we have to wait another year for the real changes in 2022.

Yeah I think 2022 will mix things up a lot. With Andy Cowell leaving Mercedes HPP their one hug advantage in the turbo hybrid era may suffer. Agree about Danny Ric. He's one of my favourite drivers because he's the type of sportsman I like. Focused and ruthless whilst playing and friendly and happy away from his sport. I think Ocon will see a bit of a change of pace with how his team mate treats him next year thats for sure.

I think Haus might struggle next year with their amateurs and one of them being the wild child Mazepin.

Hopefully McLaren continue their progress and start challenging for wins again.

It's a good move by Red Bull with Perez. Alvin wasn't good enough sadly for him.

I agree about McLaren. I like them and hope they show good progress. Yet another new engine supplier for them but they are used to changing.

They've gone full circle with engines. They left Mercedes due to apparent conflict of interest, but have returned a few years later.

F1 really need another engine supplier once Honda leave yet again.

Not sure who would be up for it? Most are going the EV route.
