Penny Morduant - the art of light-touch loyalty

She 'doesn't want to dignify the rumours' by speaking out - yeah, right. The knife is glinting in her hand! And then it will be 'Well, others put me forward, but when it became inevitable there was going to be a challenge from somewhere...'

Have to say, she's long been my biggest fear, to the point where I avoided talking about it in case of jinxing things. Nice prettyish not-posh Penny the swimsuit model. Not very right-wing, just the type to get the Daily Mail in a lather and all the quiet Tory types back into the fold. Hopefully the brand is just too busted that they could actually win, but Starmer's appeal is brittle. With a fair wind and the inevitable fawning Press, it's not surprising the Tories see her as their last chance...

“Busted” - nice 😁

Royal navy background as well. I was surprised at the time when the tories went for Truss over her. She had that role during the queen's funeral and Charles' coronation too. Certainly someone with a highlights reel you'd think would appeal to their base.

BUT surely nobody would want to take over the tory party before the next election? No time to do anything, lose big in less than a year, take the blame, immediate pressure to resign.

Pippa Crerar in the The Guardian today. According to her friends, she is loyal to Sunak. She’s being set up by rivals for the job, who are trying to make her look disloyal.
Sounds like she would be in with a chance then.

Depends what you'd be in for it I suppose?

The ego of some of these people, I wouldn't be shocked if the status of being PM and getting their name in the history books was enough of a prize to tempt regardless of what might come after. And Mordaunt does come across as particularly shallow and superficial.

I don't think it'll happen, but I could see a fair few interested in taking the job on for that reason alone.

Never had you down as a matelot Stu, recent or some time ago?

Penny v Kemi.

How an earth did the country come to this? (Actually think we all know, but the slide down the u-bend has been quicker than last night's vindaloo)

Just have to hope Starmer/Labour do something for the people and not just give it the "oooohhhh well, it's a bit of a mess isn't it, but nothing we we can do" bollox. Otherwise in 5 years one of the extreme RWNJs will be in power.

Grim.

How did the world come to this. Trump, Le Penn, various other Right wing politicians making headway in the polls. I agree that Labour needs to get it right otherwise in 5 years time we could be in real trouble with the next lot of Tories.

Absolutely, the worldwide lurch to the extreme right has been pretty shocking ☹️

I work with some people who worked in her private office when she was a minister in my department. She is very well thought of and only ever heard good things about her. Shallow and superficial being as far away from them as I could describe.

I spoke with Anna Turley in Rita's a couple of times and last time was during the tory leadership campaign (the truss one)... she said Mordaunt was the one candidate that Labour did not want to win.

Is it a worldwide lurch though? Or jsut Europe and north America? Could be a reaction to the balance of economic power swinging back East?
Stick Bolsarano in there, although he did take it too far and he was booted out.

But still got in there with people voting for him.

Hopefully people, seduced by the empty promises and bullsh*t by these RW charlatans have seen enough and start to look at better options**

** Which end of the sh*t sandwich do you want to take a bite out of?

I do find it interesting in that during PMQs she is always quite ‘dignified’ in that she doesn’t get involved in all the cheering and jeering that the other Tory front bench do.
