Pen?

Absolutely obvious.

I might be hopelessly naive, but I've always hated how grappling and holding other players is allowed to be part of football. I wish it were basically an offence to lay your hands on another player in almost any way.

Not really. They're just doing that hugging but not touching thing that defenders tend to do at corners now. Maguire had his arm around the Iranian also. Always a coin toss pens at corners though.

Maguire did nothing wrong stones has a little tug at the defender before the defender returned the favour before he ball even came in, it’s likely that will be why we didn’t get it.

Well two pretty good penalties not reviewed on VAR for England, one pretty dubious one reviewed and given to Iran and then there was this "tough card happy" referee ignoring cynical foul after foul.

We will not be allowed to win this tournament.

The issue with that penalty is now they have to give one on every single corner. Because small pulls of the shirt happen every single time. You can’t stop the game for that unless you stop it each and every time, at which point there’d be no actual game because there’d be a free kick literally every minute.

Did they change the VAR officials at half-time? You can't possibly turn our's down and then give their's. This smacks of playing to the occasion.

Would have been a great start for the World Cup if VAR had given the foul on Maguire in the 2nd minute.
Would have stopped all the defenders holding/bear hugging for rest of tournament.
But no it’s a VAR shambles as usual.
To give that as a penalty in 114 minute of game was a joke.
2 incidents don’t even compare.

I missed the Maguire one. I saw the close-up but not the wider angle so was the ball anywhere near Maguire? They rarely give anything for off the ball infringements from set pieces. Also, Maguire's there is a bit of shoving and grabbing from both players and from Stones and whoever he was wrestling with so maybe they've decided any fouls cancel each other out.

The one given was definitely a penalty. Shirt-pulling is very blatant and you can't argue it is for balance or 50:50 etc. I hate seeing players do it because it is so easy to punish. There was no need for Stones to be doing it and he should know better.

Rubbish if the Stones one is a penalty there should have been at least 6 more pens in the England game and already 3 in the Holland game on now 20 mins in

Probably correct. There is no instance where holding a shirt is allowed. Doing it for several seconds like Stones did is undoubtedly a foul. Just because others aren't given doesn't mean that one was. Like I said before, there is usually a big difference between players challenging for the ball and off the ball shirt-pulls, pushing, shoving, impeding etc.

How can anyone possibly argue that shirt-pulling is allowed? Weird take to be honest
