Payero

Payero is not much more than a kid. He can't speak the language and it looks like Leo is the only person he can communicate with.

He's moved halfway round the world to a sign for a club where the manager seemingly doesn't want him and has been critical of him in the press.

He's barely got any game time and I'd wager he only got to play yesterday as there were literally no other options (JLS possibly but NW has been equally unwilling to play him).

He'll thrive when he can speak the language and has a manager who will "manage" him properly.

He reminds me of Rochemback a bit. I think him and Tav playing more centrally is the way forward. They both need players to pass and move with around them and can compliment each other in the way they play. He could be the man to pick out Sporar’s runs and movements too as a number 10.
I definitely agree that Tav needs to be played through the middle, he is our best option to getting the midfield sorted.

The good thing about Payero yesterday was that he was making runs into the box in injury time and able to pick out players and create goals. He is clearly fit, and match fit. He needs to be playing the next 6, 7, 8 games in a row now so he can get to grips with the football and the rhythm of the games. It's encouraging that he was sharp enough to make a last minute goal, IMO. That will do him the world of good.

Watching the 2nd goal back, I don't think I appreciated his composure when watching it live in the ground. Would have been so easy to just smash that ball across goal.

Fully agree with everybody saying give him the next few games. Completing 90 minutes and still looking full of energy in the 94th minute shows he's fit. Let him know that, whatever happens, he's starting the next x amount of games will surely give him a huge confident boost.

For years I’ve been crying out for a genuine no 10 a creative central attaching mf (not a converted winger or a forward doing a job) now we finally have and one recognised by his nation albeit in the Olympic squad but it’s still Argentina it’s still some feat to get into that side and play in front of Mcallister at Brighton to boot.

so let’s use his Latin flair he’s Argentine street fighter attitude

No 10 is a very special thing to Argentinians

Enganche: Enganche is el diez, the 10, the most mythical number in Argentinian football. The term literally means hook, the hook which links the team together, the lone ranger of the archetypal Argentinian 4-3-1-2. An enganche is the maestro that conducts the orchestra, the creative player of the team who dictates the game by passing the ball, creating links in play, and establishing the rhythm of the game. Apart from Maradona (el D10s, the God) and his idol Ricardo Bochini, a classic example of an enganche is Juan Román Riquelme. The legendary #10 of Boca Juniors is, along with being my personal favourite, for many the last specimen of the classic 10s.

Is he a number 10? I'm not having a go @zorro_mfc as you seem to know a lot more about him than I do, but this guy seems to know his stuff, says he's a central midfielder (albeit an attacking one) and not a number 10:

Why are you so sure he's a number 10?

I'm not saying he is or he isn't (as I say I've not seen enough of him) but if he isn't I don't want him to get the same criticism Rochemback did, where some expected him to be a number 10 and then moaned because he wasn't dribbling past players and showing the sort of skills associated with the position.

If you look at his playing days in Argentina he often starts the attack from his own half -- maybe he should a deep lying midfielder who can roam a little when he sees open space and pass and deliver a ball and be waiting for one of ours to deliver to him.

Done enough for me today to warrant a start against Barnsley
Definitely - if nothing else, because he didn't tire out and looks fit and ready to run for 90 minutes. I have said it since last season, but we can't rely on Howson for 3 games in a week at CM. Second half v QPR was testament to that.

If Warnock can get him to tackle as good as he can run then we have a player on our books. I’d start him v Barnsley and get him playing from a deep lying position — ok this might be dependent on the oppositions setup but if we’re going to be a counter-attacking team then we’ll need him to tackle and run with the ball consistently.
