Passport control at EU airports

Yet one of the biggest calls for Brexit was to control our borders? Yet we weren’t In Schengen? That’s a head scratcher isn’t it
Only for a Daily Express reader. Anybody who couldn't see that immigration policy is affected by Freedom of Movement whether in Schengen or not must have been living under a rock, or reading the Sun, Star or Express.

"immigration policy is affected by freedom of movement" did you mean "immigration policy is affecting freedom of movement?

My point was that the Schengen agreement, whilst being a wonderful thing, does remover some controls over your own border. If we weren't in it, why did we do something that would give us control of our own borders. Control we never lost in the first place?

It is but I thought I read a few months ago that some airports/countries were considering changing things for UK travellers. Either opening a different lane or allowing them through the automated gates.

They might do - but that would be exceptional.

UK citizens will not receive any special treatment from the EU, as they are not EU citizens.

From an EU perspective, the sooner the UK population gets to grips with the realities of life outside the EU, the sooner they will apply pressure to their government to make the requisite compromises to normalise the relationship.

Are we giving EU travellers preferential treatment?

This very board alone has suggested that process may take a while

This is "normalised".

Welcome to the future.

JFK introduced those machines a few years ago. The first time I came back I thought it was great to be straight through. What I didn't realise was that they had just added an extra layer - we still had to queue up to show the documents to immigration, now with a nice piece of paper to show it had all been scanned.
The one at Houston takes your photo, well a photo of the top of my head, still went through.

They all do that....
I loathe us customs nyboro they are so unfriendly. The only worse place I have been was Thailand but that was 2am and the army were doing the border control. I suspect they might have been better during the day.

Dubai was terrific youd think the guy checking my passport was a long lost brother.

I’ve been through Dallas airport a few times and actually it was great. Mind you it was daft o’clock and queues were small!

I am sure it depends quite a lot on the actual person doing the checks and how long you have waited increasing your frustration.

I have flown in to jfk 3 times and it's been quite bad every time. The queues were slow and quite long and it seemed like I was being interrogated once I got to the counter.

I may change my mind next time I travel to the EU with long, slow queues.

Schipol was always a pleasure

Seems to be dependent on airport. NY the worst, Houston in the middle, Dallas, LA, Philadelphia, Raleigh, Atlanta were fine.

Schiphol is great. Germany always tends to be good. France was a disaster (CDG) and Florida was ok. The very worst one for me was actually Heathrow.

Could well be bear. I have had internal flights in the US and they have been much better, my assumption was its because they are internal flights but maybe jfk just need to train their border force a bit better. A smile costs nothing.

Ah no - it's unsustainable. There'll be a rapprochement and, provided it's pitched correctly, then things will head back to the UK as being a diminished member of the EU universe.

The Times, 2025: "Prime Minister Sunak returns from Brussels after foring the EU to allow the UK to align with the single market"

JFK is dreadful, every time I've been through they've been incredibly rude. Newark on the other hand was fine.

I'm at Krakow airport at the moment awaiting to get a flight to Edinburgh.

No issues other than having to pay for a Covid test while I was here, otherwise no entry to the UK.

No issues with border control though, although that could be because there are only a couple of more scheduled flights tonight so its pretty empty.
