Paddy McNair out of contract this Summer

If the club can sign him on a deal they are happy with I would be happy for him to stay.
I think a perfect move for him would be Celtic or Rangers

Can't see anyone paying him what we pay him, especially if they have to pay a fee for him, so he's not going to agree to leave in January. He'll be able to sign for whoever he wants in the summer. He'll have suitors. Probably not with a contract as good as he has now but maybe better than what we'd offer him.

Ability-wise i've never had an issue with Paddy.

I think at times he's been an excellent defender for us, and when he's had to fill in centre mid - he's usually done a decent enough job.

He played his best football for us under Woody and Warnock in my opinion. He was one of a handful of players who i remember really did step up for the club for a few months to help get us away from relegation when warnock came in (along with marvin johnson and saville).

More than happy him staying here as long as it's not 30k a week as reported.

He's been a good player for us, and a good servant so far. If he goes, he'll be fondly remembered by me personally. I actually feel he's a bit underrated.

I really dislike these stats because it's attributing too much to a specific player. There is such a thing as correlation. If we are going through a good or bad spell when a player is in the team it isn't solely down to that player's inclusion/absence. There are far too many variables week to week just looking at our own 11 never mind the opposition and teams go on good/bad runs all the time.

There are definitely some players where this would be true because it really changes the way we play like Hackney or if we could swap Crooks for Akpom or Greenwood for Mbappe but I don't think McNair changes the way we play significantly.
Using the team winning statistic to justify why a player is good/bad or better than another player is ridiculous.

Anyone remember that Gareth Bale played 24 games for Tottenham before they won with him on the side? I would guess his winning ratio in that team never recovered from that. He then went on to be an £85m player and one of the best players in the world within 2 seasons.

Just bare that in mind next time anyone thinks about using team winning/losing ratios to back up why a player should be starting.

Simple fact is hes been good servant but are we missing him atm? Tge club wants to recruit younger players on less dough who could do the same job. Its his chance for a big payday before he retires

McNair was originally brought in after being Sunderland’s standout out player in their relegation season from The Championship. They were dreadful tbf!

From memory he was playing in their midfield a lot and seemed to remember him chipping in with a fair few goals in that season.

I think he joined us with a decent reputation and if we’re being honest we probing hoped for a bit more from him. Pulis (******) spunked £5m on him and then never seemed to play him - mainly as he was bang average at RB and was quickly dropped. He only played 15 league games for us in his first season.

Since then, I would say Paddy has always put in 100% but not sure he’s ever really kicked on to the level I’ve felt he was probably capable of. He’s got all the attributes but often made too many daft defensive mistakes, and he never quite seemed to cut it in midfield.

That said, he’s been a great servant to the club and unfortunately came to injury when he did this season. He was getting back to one of his purple patches, and he has all the ball playing attributes to suit Carricks style of play as he’s very good at playing out from the back and has a wide range of passing.

I’d be tempted to offer him a short term deal on reduced wages if I could, but I imagine McNair might look to secure a longer term deal. Amazing that he’s still only 28. Feels like he’s been around forever. I remember when he made his first few appearances for United. Feels like a long time ago.

Absolutely class at buying a cheap free kick. He’s been a great servant for this club, absolutely no issues with him whatsoever. Would be happy if he stayed, would wish him the best if he left.
