Paddy McNair - Northern Ireland Captain

I like Paddy but his wages are too high for our structure and he's the last of the "big" earners at the club.

I could see him taking a pay cut in order to stay, mind.
I agree, do you think Johnny Howson took a cut for his new contract.

Paddy is younger, but I could only see another non-parachute Championship club taking him - someone like Birmingham City or Blackburn. Brum were paying £16k to £18k per week to players like George Friend. I don't if they are still are after financial troubles.

If it's simply about cutting the wage bill.......there's a good two or three I'd cut ties with, ahead of Paddy McNair (y)

I rarely see him have a bad game for us, seen him play very well many times. Look at the stats over the last two seasons for when he plays and doesn't, too much of a coincidence over that many games. We're a better team when he plays.

I have to laugh sometimes when I see fans being affronted by players wages and transfer fees, they talk like the money is coming out of their own bank accounts.
If Paddy is happy at Boro and wants to stay, I dare say a compromise will be reached. If he wants to leave for a big pay day, then so be it. Personally, I would like him to stay as he is a model pro, similar to J Howson.

Paddy has survived six Managers [including one caretaker] since he arrived. Injuries aside, he's made 188 appearances for us and for money well spent. The lad is still only 28 and offers more than those old players looking to return after injury next season. He's adapted to the style of play of all the Managers, played in different positions and taken on board unfamiliar roles to cover for injured players. He has skill, consistency and experience, which some we have on the books certainly wouldn't match the first two criteria. I hope he's offered the chance and choses to stay. Bear in mind the two or three players we may lose in the summer, [not talking about loanees] Paddy will be needed.

I like paddy’s attitude, character and he’s a very decent champo CB. But for his wage level you want one of the top 6 CBs in the champo.

He has never been a regular in a Boro defence that’s conceded less than 50 goals. That’s a failure which he has to shoulder some of

You always see an improvement in the team when Paddy returns from a period on the bench or injured. It won’t be easy or cheap to replace him if he does leave unless we have another VDB lined up.

Howson dropped form 25 to 15k a week 2 contracts back.

I'd be happy for us to offer him a new deal, providing that he doesn't ask for a higher wage.

It's likely that we'll have to pay a fee to sign his replacement and we may end up with an inferior player.

We may also end up signing an upgrage on him but for me McNair is a good player at this level and has generally performed well under Carrick, so I'd prefer for us not to take the risk.

Spot on SF. We shall only appreciate Paddy when he has gone and is playing against us.
We already have a promotion centre back 3 in V D Berg, Paddy and Lenihan ready for next season, so please do not mess with them.

I’ve never understood the criticism of Paddy. He’s been a great signing and has at least 4 years of quality left - how much to replace that?
Well he'll probably cost 4m in wages and have zero value on his contract. Is that the way the club wants to run things? Paddy is a solid 7/10 most weeks, he's not a bad player at all, but he'll never really push on to be better than he is today.

If we kept him, I'd still play a back 4 with Rav and Lenihan ahead of him. Is he better than Fry? about the same all in. Then there's Clarke to cover the left side too. He would be 4th or 5th choice CB. Can we spend 20k/week on a 5th choice CB?
