Paddy McNair - Northern Ireland Captain

* Still let him go for free in the summer?

I would love to keep Paddy, I think a players experience and versatility is hard to replace, especially when we have quite a young squad now...

However, I think his wage is the stumbling block. He's currently our highest paid player by quite a large margin? (reportedly) - unless he's willing to take a pay cut, I don't think we'll keep him.

I like Paddy but his wages are too high for our structure and he's the last of the "big" earners at the club.

I could see him taking a pay cut in order to stay, mind.

We should absolutely let him go for free if his current salary demands are anything like his current ones.

Captaining NI doesn’t actually change anything.

That said, I’d be happy to see him stay on a reduced salary, but I can’t help but feel someone else will be willing to pay him more.

We have no idea what he or anyone else is being paid currently or what their demands for a new contract are so there’s no point speculating on that. Based purely on what he brings to the team I’d be happy to see him stay if it means we have more to spend on other areas of the team instead of having to buy a replacement.

A player of his ability and experience, how much would he cost to replace?

Leninhan will be on a similiar screw

Would happily have him here next season, but only on reasonable wages and as a rotation player.

I expect McNair would sooner go somewhere where he's guaranteed starts, and I can't blame him for that.

He's one of the "old firm", still here from the days when we opened the wage book.
I don't know, but wouldn't be surprised if he was on a good wack.
He's 29 next month, so might there be more than a few clubs happy to take him on?
Keep him, if he wants to stay (y)

I'd keep him if he's happy to stay on less money but he's never been as good for us as his reported earnings suggest.

Good squad player, on the bench if we're building a team to go up. On the field if we're planning to stay in this division.

Very good centre back at this level - I’d like to see him stay but i suspect he’ll be off to pastures new

He signed his current contract in 2020. Were we really giving big wages out then? I’m not so sure.

No, but he was at that time seen (by Warnock) as the best player he'd ever managed.....

So I reckon its very feasible that he is being paid more than he is really worth to our squad 4 years later.

Does anyone believe Warnock actually believed that? I’m sure he will have to agree a pay cut to stay but I doubt he’s on the kind of money that means he would need to cut his pay in half.

Not sure. And I've no idea how truthful he was being when he said it, but I was just really pointing out that 4 years ago when he signed this deal his stock was much higher than it is now.

He initially signed in 2018, so to sign a renewed contract in 2020 suggests it was a bigger salary to discourage other clubs and keep him tied to us.
Perhaps the club are sorting out contracts nearer the time, especially for the likes of McNair and Howson?
