Over 50's could deliver takeaways - says work and pensions secretary

heres a thought mel, you ****, how about getting the under 25 year olds into work instead of tossing it off on pointless degrees
For which they pay up to and over £27K over three years + rent + food + costs of placements - like in BSc Nurse Training [for instance].
Who are we to tell people what to invest their money in?
Are you suggesting the State tells its citizens what to do and where to invest?
Perhaps it could tell big banks, global finance and big oil where to "toss off" their big profits, before its people?
What do you do with your money?
Let me tell you what you can and cant spend it on.....

This is the sort of thing that keeps them where they are, sniping at each other as opposed to them.
There’s no such thing as a pointless degree, if it’s something you are passionate about and love doing then it has a purpose.

I've looked into this as a way to earn extra cash before, but it seems weird to me with Deliveroo how you get paid. A fee for every delivery, but not with any form of sliding scale that I can see. Backed out of it.

Over 50`s / 60`s:
The big issue is once people mature - age effects health and well-being. It might not have escaped our notice, but issues such as respiratory and cardio conditions, worn out joints - like knees, hips and wrists - impact on what we can do. It cant be helped - you can polish an E-Type Jag: probably one of the best ever made, but the engine needs more TLC as it gets older and its probably not sensible to thrash the balls off it like it was new. Clearly a 50/60 year old doesnt have the same endurance and physicallity as a 20/30/40 year old.. Muscle tissue cant be maintained in the way you build it up in our 20`s / 30`s / 40`s. It takes a little longer to get back up to speed. So, any politician or other dipstick who suggests deliveroo or similar is a practical proposition needs to lead by example - and be over 50.

Now: if they were to offer serious paid training and support to fill some of the 100,000 vacancies in the NHS - that might be a far more sensible idea ?

Great post, 50 isn’t old by a long way, you’re right in saying that the body wears out but that mature outlook and experience could be put to better use. If the person needs the money and they have developed the required skills why not look to capitalise on that.
On the flip side, someone who has had a demanding high pressure career might want to work delivering things.
But, it’s a waste if they think they have something to contribute.

They might want to work delivering things [on a bike?].
Thats what some are suggesting.

Young people would probably prefer a job that is less strenuous and that makes them feel like someone that contributes. Why is it only suitable for the young? People thinking that delivering stuff is beneath them, which I'm assuming is the actual problem with the suggestion, is how companies like Deliveroo can get away with such poor pay and conditions.

I'm not siding with the suggestion from the Tory but we really need to get away from this hierarchy of how valuable jobs appear to be and start paying people what they are worth. If a job is so undesirable that the suggestion that a 50 year old could do it is insulting then it should be better paid.

What’s this over 50 lark - I’m nearly 60 and work full time
Thats not the point.
The point is about being physically capable and considering the increased vulnerability to differing health issues - which effects the type of work we do.
