Operation to cure snoring - anyone had it?

Ive seen that its now possible to have your Uvula removed and also your tonsils by laser, local anaesthetic so in and out same day.

Anyone had this done or anything similar to reduce snoring? What was the recovery like?

One of my mates had an op for snoring, he was horrendous before, on the odd time I slept on his sofa you could hear hear him and feel the house shaking, apparently he still snores but it’s far quieter than it used to be.

No but would be interested,
By snoring s horrendous. It disrupts the wife and I also wake myself up. Seems to be worse the more tired I am. So if I get run down and excessively exhausted, the snoring gets louder which disrupts me further. It's a vicious cycle.

Also get sleep apnia as well though where I stop breathing for up to a minute then wake myself up with a big gasp of air.

Wife wants me to go to a sleep clinic to try and get a diagnosis and see what help I could get.

Hi B_G

Do you find yourself very tired and nodding off during the day?

Also when you wake up and take a big gasp of air do you then go to the toilet?

Personal question I know so sorry for the intrusion.

I have sleep apnea and wear a CPAP machine and before I went to get it sorted I sounded just like you have described above.

You have absolutely nothing to lose by going to get checked out. Please do.

My mates snoring was horrendous, he had the op about 3 years ago, it did get better , but back to being horrendous again now, and he can't get another op on nhs now .

Where do you start this process? Just visit your GP ??

Sounds like you should go mate 👍
The Missus god rest her, always said my snoring was terrible. She snored like a trooper herself but every time I tried to record her to prove it she'd stop. Crafty buggers women 😀

You have just reminded me of a very good point

@Billingham red and @B_G You can get sleep apps for your phone that will record you when you are asleep...i.e for your snoring

Do that and listen back, you will be surprised just how loud it is and the disruption it will be causing those next to you
Also take any recordings you have of snoring to the doctors, it may help towards confirming a diagnosis

Good luck to all

Don't usually go to the toilet no.

And yes I do find myself nodding at work if I'm not busy. I can find afternoon meeting particularly hard.

Although I did put some of that down to the fact I get up at 4.50 to go to the gym before work. I aim to get to sleep for 9.30 so getting 7 hours+ sleep but I think with the disruption I'm getting a lot less than this in reality

Get checked out mate

I took my missus with me to the appointment with the docs, just to give her side of how bad my snoring was

He/She will ask plenty of questions, be truthful and then take it from there, the doc will take you through next steps, which if there are concerns will no doubt be a referal to a sleep clinic.

Good luck mate whatever you decide to do

I had the op probably about 10 years ago.
It was general anesthetic rather than local although I was still in and out in the same day.
Whilst the anesthetic is still numbing it is OK. But trust me, when it wears off you have the sore throat to end all sore throats.
I couldn't talk or eat solids for about a week.
The op did work for a while however now when I wake up more often than not she is in the spare room.

I know that feeling.
I usually wake myself around the 1am mark and my wife is in with my 4 year old who has his own double bed.

I'm sure she got that for him for this reason 🤣

I hate that it puts distance between us though in honesty. It makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong

From experience I can say with 100% confidence the best cure is to lose weight, I stopped completely, I've since put the weight back on and I'm terrible again, less weight on your windpipe equals less snoring.

Last week I got kicked out of bed after a few beers and went to the spare room, fairly confident I got woke up by the neighbours banging on the wall 😭

Completely worked for me too!

I don’t snore too much apart from when I’ve had a drink but when I’ve had a drink it’s the other end of the spectrum.

I used to just sleep in the spare room but that’s now the baby’s room and the other spare is my office so I have to settle with the sofa!

I'm 5ft10 and 12 stone. And without trying to sound big headed I'm in good shape. I train 5 times a week.

I spent most of my early adult life underweight. Sub 10 stone. I still had this problem then.

I see a lot of the advice online is to lose weight but I my case I don't think that's the problem. I have also read that enlarged tonsils can cause a problem and my tonsils do seem to be bigger than average. So I am wondering whether having them removed would help.
