Oh Wilder (just) Said …

He explained post-match: “Listen, I’m an emotional guy. We’ve just got beat from a footballing point of view. I’ve just got beat as manager of Middlesbrough, so I can’t stop any of that stuff (Burnley speculation), but I’m not so sure it’s the right time to ask anything like that after a really disappointing defeat from our point of view.

“I just don’t think there’s a way out of talking about it. I think it’s really unfair on anybody. I’m manager of Middlesbrough – nobody knows what’s around the corner for anything, do they? I don’t know what you want me to say or what you want me to do. You’re after me dropping my guard and saying something daft.

"I’m Middlesbrough manager, I’m enjoying working at Middlesbrough, but we’ve just been defeated. Do you want me to come out with a boring one of ‘I’m flattered by whatever because we’re winning games of football?’ Well, we haven’t won today. So, that’s basically where it’s at.”

I’m not so sure he’s going. I think he’s tried to avoid answering a question in a cack handed manner m, and made a real cack handed mess of it.

Poor performance and result today. Poor run of form. Strange time to be poaching him, perhaps.

I wouldn’t be surprised though if contact at some level has been made. Along with other potential candidates

Rereading it I think you may be right. I think he’s just made a really poor job at frostily basically telling the journo’s asking him, to do one. Let’s face it, he’s not the most eloquent of blokes at the best of times.

I think there is nothing in it, he’s going nowhere and he’s made an **** out of answering a question that has got his back up.
The simple answer and one we all wanted was ‘I’m Boro manager and not interested’.

If that’s the case there was no need for the additional line of, you never know what’s round the corner. That line just made me think something in it

It had never occurred to me that he would leave us for Burnley, but, presuming that both us and Burnley were competing in the championship next season, Burnley would presumably have a stronger squad therefore a better chance of promotion. Could this be the lure for CW? He’s proved himself and us obviously ambitious, he must have insights for both us and Burnley regarding next season

The Boro as a club and fan base has its own particular way of exerting huge pressure on the manager and players, maybe Wilder is feeling that pressure as the season collapses around him at the business end whilst the likes of Huddersfield, Forest and Luton have stepped up to the challenge.

Maybe he thinks his job here could be under threat?

Boll ox.
All he had to say was, I’m Middlesbrough manager, just got here really and I’m focused on my job end of.

Exactly. If he as lured by an offer from BURNLEY (relegation certs) so soon in his boro career - good riddance

Problem is, if he’s just made a proper balls up of answering the question (and he has no intentions of going,) the sentiment among fans now could turn to one of ‘**** him then!’ And it might be completely misdirected? Kind of feels like he’s got to come out and nip in the **** properly now.

Yes. Agreed. The club needs to manage this. I would be gutted if he left us.

Burnley’s next game is Thursday… surely, if an impact manager is needed to cling on to Premier League ‘life’ , then a new manager would have been installed by now (?).
I definitely believe today’s performance has been tainted by all this shoite - Wilders ambiguous replies do seem to hint at a contact with Burnley, but that he’s thinking the offer over, not leaving

I would say Wilder is the best manager we have had since Karanka but if he can be tempted by Burnley then would you be really disappointed if he was to go.

No, it wouldn't bother me. I doubt it'll happen, but if it did then MFC would be compensated and could bring in some younger manager with a vision.

Wilder seems to gave turned into another version of Pulisnock.

When he turned up it was clear where the team was lacking but he didn't fix it. I didn't expect a miracle striker but Connolly and Balogun have been shockingly bad. Ikpeazu would have been far better.

If I was Steve Gibson, I'm not sure that I'd have any confidence he'd sign the right players in the summer. If the chairman isn't confident in the manager, he won't back him with transfer money. If the manager doesn't have transfer money then - because the team has so many shortcomings - we could go into the 2022/3 season with basically the same team, and a few new waifs and strays. That's not going to start well, and we'll be looking for a new manager in the autumn.

As I said, it wouldn't bother me if Wilder went, but if he's going then it should be now, not in October.

I mentioned elsewhere: could this explain our recent lack lustre performances?

Maybe he’s thinking he can go no further forward with the current squad , got little money coming up to try and improve , so Burnley may seem a better option
