Heading to Northumberland next week for a few days with the Mrs and Kids (Aged 6 and 4).

Weather looks somewhat terrible so whilst we will get our waterproofs on and embrace the weather for the most part, do people recommend any not so wet activities for us to consider.

Alnwick Castle and Garden on the same site - can buy entry for both with a good amount of indoor stuff available, particularly in the castle. Can kill plenty of time in Barter Books while you're in the vicinity.

Cragside, again best for outdoor stuff, but plenty to see in the house.

Generally I head that way for outdoor stuff thought to be honest.

Depending how far North you are you could always pop back down to Newcastle for a day at the Centre for Life. That was always a good day out when our daughter was a young 'un.

WeeGord will invite you all for tea and cake at his house one day, NorthumberlandBoro the next and HarryVegas for an evening meal. 😜

I’m sure they are one or two others in that region that will offer packed lunches for your days out. 🤣😜😜

You might be able to snatch a few hours of decent weather, you never know.

Vindolanda are still excavating and the kids will enjoy roaming about in the ruins. Found a spearhead when I was there a few weeks ago. Corbridge is a lovely village and I saw Mary Beard there yesterday, so historian star spotting is possible.

The birds of prey centre at Kielder is nice for kids to visit and although I haven't been yet I'm wanting to go to Ad Gefrin in Wooler at some point.

Did Bamburgh castle few days ago. Was good to see the history of it. Started watching the last kingdom afterwards haha

Was only there for 2 days really so only scratched the surface. Will be going back

Will do a boat trip to holy island, we decided not to because of how windy it was

If you're doing a gentle explore around Northumberland it's well worth popping to Wooler for a couple of hours. Seahouses is well worth visiting with the kids (take plenty of 2p and 10p pieces for the amusements) and is a stones throw from Bamburgh Castle.

If you're heading out towards the west of the county Hexham is a lovely little town to explore. Nearer the south-east of the county there's the fantastic Woodhorn Colliery Museum which not only has a lot about the mining heritage of the area and the fantastic Pitmen Painters, but they also tend to have different non-coal mining displays and events that change every week or two.

If you're in that area then stop off at the Gingerbread Coffee House in Red Row for some lovely home made cakes to go with your tea or coffee. That's close to Druridge Bay which is another great place for kids provided its not raining, also have the QEII Country Park just along from Woodhorn.

If you're into your history there are a ton of old castles and peel towers many of which are accessible to wander around and explore. Warkworth castle is an excellent way to kill an hour or two if you're into ruins, though as already mentions Alnwick Castle and Gardens can fill the majority of a day if you're around there.

Woodhorn's a great shout. Have seen some excellent exhibitions there - Wallace & Gromit sets, Lego Architecture and The Art of Album Covers give some idea of the variety of things there.
